Mat Pilates: Core Strength — A pilates workout at home where each mat move unlocks after the one before

Mat Pilates: Core Strength is a pilates workout at home app for Android built around one question: what should I practise today? Sixteen mat pilates exercises sit in a skill tree, and each move unlocks only after you have practised the moves it builds on. Sessions run with timed holds, a rep counter and written cues, with no videos.

The Hundred opens once you have tried Lateral Breathing and the Pelvic Curl, Teaser needs the Roll-Up and Double Leg Stretch, and Boomerang needs both Teaser and The Saw. The order follows how the classical mat repertoire is usually built, so the app, not your impatience, decides what comes next.

What it is

Mat Pilates: Core Strength is a free-to-start Android app for practising mat pilates at home. It has 16 exercises from the classical mat repertoire arranged as a skill tree in which each move unlocks after the moves it builds on. Every move has a written cue, a dosage and the muscles it works, and sessions run with timed holds and a rep counter. An AI session planner builds a plan from the moves you have unlocked. It gives general fitness information and is not medical advice.

Background

What is mat pilates, and what does a sensible beginner progression look like?

Mat pilates is a method of controlled, low-impact exercises done on the floor, with attention on breathing, trunk control and the alignment of the spine and pelvis. Classes usually start with simple breathing and pelvic movements and move to more demanding shapes as control improves. A sensible progression is slow and specific: master the foundation exercise, then add the move that depends on it.

Breath firstlateral breathing

Pilates typically starts with breathing into the sides and back of the ribcage rather than lifting the chest. It sets a rhythm for everything that follows and is the entry point of the skill tree here.

Pelvic and spinal articulationcurls and imprints

Moves such as the Pelvic Curl teach you to peel the spine off the mat one segment at a time. The control learned there is what later moves, like the Roll-Up, rely on.

Holds and dosagehow much, not just which move

A move can be written as reps, counts or a timed hold, such as one hundred small pumps in The Hundred. Sensible dosage matters as much as the choice of exercise, so each move in the app carries one.

Variantseasier and harder versions

Many mat exercises have a version with bent knees or a version with legs extended. A ladder of variants lets you step down without abandoning the move when it is too hard.

How it works

How a session works

A session can be planned for you, picked by hand or generated from your goal, and it always draws on what you have already unlocked.

  1. Choose the session

Start the planned session shown on the Today tab, pick the moves yourself, or open the AI Session Architect and set a goal, equipment and length.

  2. Follow the timed player

The player runs each exercise with a countdown or rep counter and a written cue, with an optional breathing ring. There are no pose photos or videos.

  3. Rate it and watch the tree

Mark each move too easy, on point or too hard. Your practice score, streak, history and the skill tree update, and History shows which moves fight you.

Fit

Who it's for — and who it isn't

A good fit if you

  • Are a beginner who wants a clear order for learning mat pilates
  • Are returning to exercise after a break and want to rebuild gradually
  • Prefer written cues and timed holds to following a video
  • Like seeing progress as a tree that fills in and a streak that grows
  • Want a short floor-based routine that needs only a mat

Not the right tool if you

  • Want video or photo demonstrations, since every move is taught in written cues
  • Need rehabilitation or physical therapy, because the app is not medical advice
  • Need an iPhone app, as it is currently on Google Play for Android
  • Expect the top of the tree free, since Pro unlocks Teaser, Criss-Cross, Swan Dive, Open Leg Rocker and Boomerang

Safety and limits

Read this before your first session

Mat Pilates: Core Strength gives general fitness information. It is not medical advice or physical therapy, and it does not diagnose or treat any condition. Written cues cannot see your form, so move within a range that feels comfortable.

Stop any move that causes pain. If you are pregnant or have recently given birth, or you have osteoporosis, a disc injury, back or neck pain, recent surgery, high blood pressure or a heart condition, ask a doctor or a qualified professional before you start.

Treat the AI session plans and form tips as suggestions. They are generated, they cannot watch you, and they do not replace a qualified instructor.

Privacy

What the AI features send

You can start as a guest without an account, and signing in with email or Google is optional. AI features ask for your consent first and then send your goal, equipment, session length, any session notes you type, the move you ask about and your app language to the app's server and a third-party AI model, never your name or email.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is a good app for a pilates workout at home?

Look for one that tells you what to do next and how much of it. Mat Pilates: Core Strength has 16 mat exercises in a skill tree, written cues, timed holds and a rep counter, so a session at home needs only a mat. It is free to start on Android.

How is a skill tree different from a list of workouts?

A list lets you jump to any move, including ones you are not ready for. In Mat Pilates: Core Strength each exercise unlocks after you have practised the moves it builds on, so The Hundred opens after Lateral Breathing and the Pelvic Curl, and Boomerang needs both Teaser and The Saw.

Is mat pilates suitable for beginners?

Many beginners start with mat pilates because it is floor-based and low-impact, but the right start depends on your health and fitness. The app begins with breathing and pelvic moves, and anyone with back or neck pain, an injury, pregnancy or a heart condition should ask a doctor or qualified professional first.

Does the app have videos or photos of each move?

No. Mat Pilates: Core Strength teaches every move in plain written cues, with a dosage and the muscles it works, the way an instructor would talk you through it. The player adds a countdown, a rep counter and an optional breathing ring.

What does the AI Session Architect do?

It builds a session from the moves you have unlocked, around the goal, equipment and session length you pick, such as core, flexibility or full body, in 10 to 45 minutes. It is a suggestion, not a prescription, and you can still choose your own moves.

What is free and what does Pro add?

Free includes all 11 beginner and intermediate moves, unlimited manual sessions, the player, history, streaks, two AI plans a week and three AI form tips a day. Pro unlocks the top of the tree, unlimited AI plans and tips, the full Weekly Practice Review, ad-free streak repair and no ads.

What happens if I miss a day?

You can repair your streak once a month. On the free plan that takes a short ad, and Pro repairs it without one. Practice reminders and a streak-at-risk nudge are available, and both are opt-in.

Does Mat Pilates: Core Strength work offline?

The catalog and your progress stay readable offline. AI plans and form tips need a connection because they are generated on a server.

Is Mat Pilates: Core Strength the same app as Pilates Progression?

Yes. Mat Pilates: Core Strength is the title of the Google Play listing, and the app's own store description also calls it Pilates Progression. It is one Android app with 16 mat exercises in a skill tree, and you can start as a guest with no account.

Is it on iPhone, and which languages does it support?

At the moment it is on Google Play for Android. The app has ten languages and light and dark themes.
