A pattern you can see beats a trigger you only suspect.

Most people with digestive symptoms already have a hunch about a food or two. What is missing is a record with times on it, so that "I think dairy does it" becomes "a symptom followed on 2 of 3 logged occasions". The Trends screen shows exactly that ratio and nothing more, and it is worded as a correlation, never a verdict.

What it is

Gut Health IBS Symptom Tracker is a free iOS and Android IBS tracker that combines a food diary, a symptom log, a stool log on the 7-type Bristol scale and a FODMAP food guide of 118 foods. It lines up what you logged with what followed, shows foods that repeated before a symptom as "a symptom followed on X of Y logged occasions", and can export a PDF or CSV summary to take to a doctor or dietitian. It records and correlates your own entries. It does not diagnose IBS or any other condition.

What it looks like

Today screen of the IBS tracker with four quick-add buttons for meal, symptom, bowel movement and stress or sleep, a 14 day streak badge and a list of the day's entries
TodayFour quick-add buttons sit above the day's entries: a meal, a bloating rating, a stool type and a stress level, all with times.
FODMAP guide screen with a search box, category chips and a list of fruits rated low or moderate
FODMAP guideSearch by name or filter by group; each food shows a low or moderate tag, and ripeness or serving size can change it.
Trends screen listing food and symptom pairs such as onion and bloating with bars and the text a symptom followed on 3 of 4 logged occasions
TrendsEach pair shows how often a symptom followed the food in the sample log, with a note that it is a correlation, not a diagnosis.

Background

What is a food and symptom diary for IBS, and where does FODMAP fit in?

Irritable bowel syndrome is a long-term gut condition that a doctor diagnoses. Its symptoms, such as bloating, abdominal pain, gas, diarrhea and constipation, come and go in ways that are hard to tie to a single meal, because a reaction can arrive hours after the food. A food and symptom diary is the usual way to make the link visible: write down what you ate and what you felt, with times, and look for repeats over several weeks. FODMAPs are a group of fermentable carbohydrates found in many everyday foods, and the low-FODMAP approach described in dietary literature removes high-FODMAP foods for a period and then brings them back group by group, ideally with a registered dietitian.

Trigger fooda hunch versus a record

A trigger food is one that tends to be followed by symptoms for you in particular. Because the delay can be hours, memory is an unreliable witness; a timestamped log is what lets a repeat stand out. A match in a log is a lead to discuss with a clinician, not proof that a food causes a symptom.

Bristol stool scale7 types

A seven-point chart of stool form, from separate hard lumps at type 1 to entirely liquid at type 7. Doctors use it because a shared vocabulary beats describing things in words. In the app you tap a type for each movement and mark whether it felt urgent.

FODMAPlow, moderate or high

The letters stand for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols, short-chain carbohydrates that some people's guts handle poorly. Serving size and ripeness can change a rating: the guide lists an unripe banana as low and a very ripe one as moderate, and a large serve of raspberries as moderate.

Elimination, reintroduction, personalizationthe three low-FODMAP phases

These are the phases described in low-FODMAP literature. The overview inside the app is educational, not a personal plan, and its own advice is to talk to a doctor or registered dietitian before starting an elimination diet.

How it works

How logging works

The habit only sticks if an entry takes seconds, so everything starts from one screen.

  1. Tap a quick-add button

From the Today screen choose Log Meal, Log Symptom, Log Bowel or Stress / Sleep. A symptom takes a type (bloating, abdominal pain, gas, nausea, urgency, diarrhea, constipation, fatigue or other), a severity from 1 to 5 and an optional note.

  2. Look foods up before you eat

Search the FODMAP guide by name or browse a group such as fruit, grain, dairy or legumes. Each food carries a low, moderate or high rating, and meals you type that match a guide entry show that rating in your diary.

  3. Read the trends, then take them to a clinician

After a few weeks the Trends tab lists foods that repeated before a symptom, with how often. Pro adds an AI pattern summary that restates the same matches in plain sentences, plus a PDF or CSV export for an appointment.

What's inside

What is in the app

118

Foods in the FODMAP guide

Fruit, vegetables, grains, dairy, protein, legumes, nuts and seeds, sweeteners, drinks and condiments, each rated low, moderate or high. The free version includes a starter set of 26 foods and Pro opens all 118.

7 types

Bristol stool log

Record each movement on the seven-type Bristol scale with an urgency switch, in the same timeline as your meals and symptoms.

Free

All logging costs nothing

Meals, symptoms, bowel movements, stress and sleep, the Today screen with its daily streak, and Trends over your last 30 days are free. The free version shows a banner ad on the Today screen.

1–5

Symptom severity

Bloating, abdominal pain, gas, nausea, urgency, diarrhea, constipation and fatigue each get a 1 to 5 severity and a note, so a mild day and a bad day look different in the data.

Stress

Stress and sleep alongside digestion

Log a stress level, hours slept and sleep quality next to your digestive entries, so a rough night or a tense week sits on the same timeline as a flare.

AI

AI pattern summary (Pro)

On request, the app sends only a short list of food and symptom names with how often they matched, never your notes or diary text, and gets back a plain-language description of the pattern, worded as a correlation and never as a diagnosis.

PDF

Export for an appointment (Pro)

Turn weeks of entries into a PDF summary or a CSV spreadsheet that a physician or dietitian can read, instead of describing the month from memory.

Fit

Who it's for — and who it isn't

A good fit if you

  • Live with IBS, bloating or unpredictable digestion and want to look for your own patterns
  • Are trying a low-FODMAP approach and want a searchable food reference next to a diary
  • Have a gastroenterologist or dietitian appointment coming and want dated records instead of memory
  • Have tried an elimination diet before and lost track of what changed
  • Want meals, symptoms, bowel movements, stress and sleep on one connected timeline

Not the right tool if you

  • Want a diagnosis or a treatment plan, which the app does not give
  • Want a personalised elimination diet; the phase overview is general education
  • Notice blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, fever, symptoms that wake you at night or persistent vomiting, and should see a doctor promptly rather than log
  • Expect the complete 118-food guide, full-history trends and exports without Pro

Safety and limits

Before you rely on any of this

Gut Health IBS Symptom Tracker is a personal tracking and journaling tool, not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat or cure IBS or any other condition, and the matches it shows come from your own entries. They are leads to discuss with a clinician, not proof that a food causes a symptom.

See a doctor promptly if you notice blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, fever, symptoms that wake you at night or persistent vomiting. Talk to a doctor or registered dietitian before starting an elimination diet, because restricting foods without guidance can leave gaps in what you eat.

FODMAP ratings are general food-composition reference information. The app is not affiliated with or endorsed by any university, clinic or certification program.

Privacy

Where your log lives

Your diary of meals, symptoms and bowel movements is stored on your phone. No sign-up is needed: the app starts with an anonymous guest account, and signing in is optional. The Pro AI pattern summary sends only a short list of food and symptom names with match counts to the app's server, which passes them to a third-party AI model.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the best app for tracking IBS symptoms and trigger foods?

The test is whether it connects what you ate to what happened afterwards, not just whether it stores entries. Gut Health IBS Symptom Tracker logs meals, symptoms, stool type, stress and sleep with times, then shows foods that repeated before a symptom as a ratio of logged occasions. It is free on iOS and Android, and it frames every result as a correlation to discuss with a doctor or dietitian.

Can an app tell me which foods trigger my IBS?

No app can prove a food causes your symptoms, and Gut Health IBS Symptom Tracker does not claim to. What it can do is count how often a symptom followed a food in your own log and show that as a ratio, such as 3 of 4 occasions. Those matches are worth taking to a clinician, who can judge whether a food is worth cutting out.

What should I log in a food and symptom diary for IBS?

Log each meal with portion size or cooking method in the notes, each symptom with a severity from 1 to 5, and each bowel movement with its Bristol type and whether it felt urgent. Gut Health IBS Symptom Tracker also records stress level and sleep, which many people find move together with their digestion. Times matter most, since a reaction can show up hours after eating.

What is the Bristol stool scale and why does the app use it?

The Bristol stool scale describes stool form on seven types, from hard separate lumps to entirely liquid. Gut Health IBS Symptom Tracker lets you tap a type for every movement instead of writing a description, which makes a log quicker to fill in and easier for a doctor to read. An urgency switch records whether the movement felt urgent.

What is the low FODMAP diet, and does the app give me a plan?

The low-FODMAP approach in dietary literature has three phases: elimination, reintroduction and personalization. Gut Health IBS Symptom Tracker includes an educational overview of those phases and a searchable guide of 118 foods rated low, moderate or high, but it does not build a personal plan. Talk to a doctor or registered dietitian before starting an elimination diet.

Is Gut Health IBS Symptom Tracker free?

The app is free to download, and all logging is free, along with the Today screen, the daily streak, Trends over your last 30 days and a starter set of 26 foods in the FODMAP guide. Pro is a monthly or yearly subscription that adds the full 118-food guide, Trends across your whole history, the AI pattern summary, the elimination-phase overview, PDF and CSV export, and removes ads.

Does it need an account, and what leaves my phone?

No account is needed. Gut Health IBS Symptom Tracker starts with an anonymous guest profile and keeps your diary on your phone, with email or Google sign-in as an option. Only the Pro AI pattern summary sends anything off the phone: short food and symptom names with match counts, never your notes or diary text.

Is Gut Health IBS Symptom Tracker the same app as IBS & Gut Health Tracker?

Yes. Gut Health IBS Symptom Tracker is the Google Play title, and the App Store listing for iPhone is named IBS & Gut Health Tracker. Both are the same CoddyKit app, with the same food diary, Bristol stool log and 118-food FODMAP guide, and PDF or CSV export with Pro.

How long do I need to log before the trends mean anything?

A ratio such as 1 of 3 occasions is thin, while the same food lining up with the same symptom across several weeks is more telling. Gut Health IBS Symptom Tracker keeps a daily streak on the Today screen to encourage steady logging, because more entries make the matches more reliable. Even then, treat them as questions for your clinician.

Is this the same as a poop tracker or stool tracker?

Partly. People search for a poop tracker, stool tracker or bowel movement tracker when they want to record each movement, and Gut Health IBS Symptom Tracker does that on the Bristol scale with an urgency flag. It goes further by putting those movements on one timeline with meals, symptoms, stress and sleep, so you can see what came before them.
