GA4 Explorations Tool Overview
GA4 Explorations is a flexible analysis workspace where you create custom reports beyond the standard interface. Unlike the fixed reports in the main GA4 navigation, Explorations lets you drag and drop dimensions and metrics, apply segments, set custom date ranges, and choose from multiple visualization types to answer specific business questions.
Free-Form Exploration Report
The Free-Form exploration is the most flexible report type in GA4. It works like a pivot table where you choose rows, columns, values, and filters freely. Use it to build cross-dimensional analyses — for example, comparing conversion rates by traffic source AND device type simultaneously, which is impossible in standard reports.
Funnel Exploration for Conversion Analysis
The Funnel exploration visualizes the percentage of users who complete each step in a defined sequence — from landing page to product page to cart to purchase. It highlights exactly where in the funnel the largest drop-offs occur, revealing the highest-impact optimization opportunities for your conversion rate.
Path Exploration for User Journeys
Path exploration shows the actual sequences of pages and events users move through on your site, starting from a point you define. It reveals unexpected user behaviors — like visitors from a blog post navigating to an unrelated section of the site — that can inform both content strategy and site architecture decisions.
Creating Segments in Explorations
Segments in GA4 Explorations filter the data to focus on a specific subset of users or events — for example, users who came from organic search and completed a purchase. Unlike filters, segments can be applied across the entire exploration and compared against each other within the same report.
Secondary Dimensions for Deeper Insights
Adding a secondary dimension to any exploration breaks down your primary metric into a more granular view. For example, viewing sessions by traffic source as the primary dimension and then adding device category as a secondary dimension reveals whether mobile users from social media behave differently than desktop users from organic search.
Saving and Sharing Explorations
GA4 Explorations are saved to your account and are not visible to other users by default. To share an exploration with teammates, use the Share option in the exploration settings to grant view access. Shared explorations are read-only for collaborators, preventing accidental changes to a report others depend on.
Google Looker Studio Connection
Looker Studio (formerly Google Data Studio) connects directly to GA4 as a data source, enabling you to build polished, branded dashboards with charts, tables, and date range controls. Unlike GA4 Explorations, Looker Studio reports can be shared publicly, embedded in websites, or scheduled for automatic email delivery.
Building a Simple Marketing Dashboard
A foundational marketing dashboard in Looker Studio typically includes: a date range control, a sessions and conversions trend line chart, a traffic source breakdown table, a top pages by traffic chart, and a conversion rate by channel scorecard. This single page gives stakeholders an instant performance overview without digging into GA4 directly.
Scheduling Automated Report Delivery
In Looker Studio, use the Schedule Email Delivery option to automatically send a PDF snapshot of your dashboard to any email address on a daily, weekly, or monthly schedule. This eliminates manual reporting tasks and ensures stakeholders receive consistent, up-to-date information without needing to log into any analytics tool themselves.
Segment Overlap Exploration
The Segment Overlap exploration shows how much two or three audience segments share in common — for example, how many users are both organic search visitors AND newsletter subscribers. These intersections often reveal your highest-value audience segments, helping you identify the characteristics of your most engaged and convertible visitors.

Reports and Dashboards Recap
GA4 Explorations provide flexible custom analysis through Free-Form, Funnel, Path, and Segment Overlap report types, enhanced by segments and secondary dimensions. Explorations can be shared with teammates in read-only mode. Looker Studio connects to GA4 to build shareable, embeddable dashboards with automated email delivery — eliminating manual reporting and keeping all stakeholders consistently informed on key performance trends.
