App Store Optimization Fundamentals

Optimize your app listing to rank higher and convert more store page visitors.

What is ASO and Why It Matters

App Store Optimization (ASO) is the process of improving an app's visibility and conversion rate within the Apple App Store and Google Play. Just as SEO drives organic web traffic, ASO drives organic app downloads without paid user acquisition spend.

With over five million apps across both stores, discoverability is intensely competitive. A well-executed ASO strategy can reduce cost per install by 50 percent or more by increasing the proportion of downloads that come through organic search rather than paid channels.

Apple App Store vs Google Play Differences

The two major stores differ significantly in their ranking algorithms and optimization factors. Apple heavily weights the app title and subtitle fields, while Google's algorithm also indexes the full description text for keywords, similar to web SEO.

Google Play updates keyword indexing within days of a metadata change, while Apple takes longer to reflect changes after a new submission. Testing metadata changes and understanding the update cycle for each store is essential for accurate ASO experimentation.
