Van Life deliberately has no map of places to park or camp. It is for the unglamorous half of rig life: knowing which system is due next, what you spent keeping it running and what to check before you leave.

What it is

Van Life: RV Maintenance is a free Android app that tracks maintenance and costs for RVs, campervans, motorhomes and travel trailers. It seeds starter reminders for 11 systems (roof, tires, water heater, propane, generator, awning, slide-outs, battery and solar, plumbing and seals, engine oil and brakes), each due by date or by mileage, whichever your rig reaches first, and logging a service with cost and mileage resets the reminder. It also has 19 troubleshooting guides, trip checklists by trip type and climate, and monthly spend tracking.

Background

What RV maintenance should you keep track of, and why by date or by mileage?

RV and campervan upkeep splits into two kinds of wear. Some parts wear with use, such as engine oil and brakes, and are due by mileage. Others wear with time and weather whether or not you drive, such as roof seals, tires and water heater components, and are due by date. A rig that sits for months can be overdue on the second kind while the odometer barely moves, which is why a useful log tracks both and flags whichever is reached first.

Roof and sealstime and sun

Sealant around vents, seams and edges ages in sun and weather. Water getting in is slow and expensive damage, so regular inspection of the roof and seals is one of the checks owners are told not to skip.

Tirespressure, tread and age

RV tires carry heavy loads and often sit unused, so pressure, tread depth and age all matter. Many manufacturers advise considering age as well as tread, so check your own tire maker's guidance.

Propane systemleak checks before cold trips

Furnaces, stoves and fridges can all run on propane. Checking the connections for leaks before a trip, and especially before cold weather when furnace use rises, is basic safety work.

Battery and solarthe quiet failure

House batteries and solar setups tend to fail slowly, shown by a battery not charging or a power budget that no longer lasts the trip. Recording the checks shows when performance began to slip.

Slide-outs, awning and plumbingmoving parts and water

Moving parts need regular lubrication and inspection, and plumbing and seals need checking for leaks, so these systems are tracked on their own reminders.

How it works

How the app is used

Set the rig up once, and the loop afterwards is log it, reset it and take the right checklist.

  1. Add your rig

Enter your rig and the app immediately seeds starter reminders for 11 systems, each with a baseline interval and practical maintenance tips, so you are not building a list from a blank page.

  2. Log each service

Record the service with its cost and mileage, and the matching reminder resets and recalculates the next due date or mileage. Real local notifications tell you when something comes due.

  3. Prepare the trip

Choose a trip type and climate and work through the checklist for departure, setup, packing and breakdown, then add fuel, campsite, propane, grocery and repair costs as you go.

Roof, tires, water heater, propane, generator, awning, slide-outs, battery and solar, plumbing and seals, engine oil and brakes, each with a baseline interval and tips.

19

Troubleshooting guides

Symptom-matched guides such as a water heater that will not ignite, a fridge not cooling on propane or a slide-out stalling, each with a clear call-a-pro safety line. All are free.

Trip

Checklists by trip and climate

Lists composed for a weekend with full hookups, boondocking, winter, a first trip or a long haul, across mild, hot, cold or variable weather.

Cost

Spend tracking

Monthly spend across fuel, campsites, propane, groceries, repairs and more, with the service log building your history and cost as you go.

Offline

Cached on the device

Reminders, service history and the trip checklist still show with no signal, which is where the checklist is usually needed.

AI

AI schedule and trip planner (Pro)

Pro adds an AI maintenance schedule built from your own service history, AI troubleshooting beyond the built-in guides, a trip cost estimate and packing list, an annual spend dashboard, CSV export, unlimited rigs and no ads.

Fit

Who it's for — and who it isn't

A good fit if you

  • Own an RV, campervan, motorhome or travel trailer and want one record of every service
  • Want reminders by date or by mileage, since parts wear in both ways
  • Forget what you spent on repairs, fuel and propane across the year
  • Camp in places with no signal and want the checklist cached on the phone
  • Run more than one rig and want each tracked separately with Pro

Not the right tool if you

  • Use an iPhone, because the app is on Android for now
  • Want a campsite finder or a map of places to park or camp, which the app does not have
  • Expect the app to replace a manufacturer's manual or a qualified technician

Safety and limits

Safety and limits

Van Life: RV Maintenance is a record-keeping and reminder tool. Its baseline intervals and tips are general starting points, so follow your rig's manufacturer manual and local rules for the real schedule.

Propane, generators, batteries and electrical systems can be dangerous. Each troubleshooting guide carries a call a pro safety line, and anything involving a gas leak, a fire risk or a fault you cannot clearly identify belongs with a qualified technician.

Privacy

What the app stores

Van Life stores what you log, such as rigs, services, reminders, trips and expenses, under your account, and it says this is never shared or sold. The app caches your reminders, service history and trip checklist on the device so they still show without signal. The free version shows banner and interstitial ads.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is a good app for RV maintenance reminders?

Look for one that tracks both date and mileage, since roof seals and tires age with time while oil and brakes wear with use. Van Life: RV Maintenance seeds reminders for 11 systems when you add your rig, flags whichever of date or mileage comes first, and recalculates the next due date when you log a service. It is free on Android.

Which RV systems does the app track?

Eleven: roof, tires, water heater, propane, generator, awning, slide-outs, battery and solar, plumbing and seals, engine oil and brakes. Each starts with a baseline service interval and practical maintenance tips, and you can log services and costs against each one.

Why track RV maintenance by date and by mileage?

Parts wear in two ways. Engine oil and brakes wear with distance, but roof sealant, tires and water heater components age with time and weather even when the rig sits. Van Life lets a reminder be due by date or by mileage, whichever your rig hits first, so a lightly driven camper is not missed.

Can it help me troubleshoot a problem like a water heater that will not ignite?

Yes. The app includes 19 symptom-matched troubleshooting guides, such as a water heater that will not ignite, a fridge not cooling on propane, a slide-out stalling, a generator that will not start and batteries not charging. Each ends with a call-a-pro safety line, and they are free. Pro adds AI troubleshooting for symptoms the built-in guides do not cover.

Does Van Life have a campsite finder?

No, deliberately. It has no campsite finder and no map of nearby places to park or camp. It is a maintenance and trip-preparation tool for the rig you already own.

What trip checklists does it include?

Checklists are composed for your trip type and climate: a weekend with full hookups, boondocking, winter, a first trip or a long haul, across mild, hot, cold or variable conditions. They cover departure, setup, packing and breakdown, so you are not working from a generic list.

Is Van Life: RV Maintenance free?

Yes, it is free to download. The free version covers one rig, unlimited service logs, reminders, trips and expenses, the complete checklist library and all 19 troubleshooting guides, and it shows ads. Pro adds unlimited rigs, an AI maintenance schedule, AI troubleshooting, an AI trip cost estimate and packing list, an annual spend dashboard, CSV export and no ads.

Does it work without a signal?

Mostly yes. Van Life caches your reminders, service history and trip checklist on the device, so they still show with no signal. Features that use AI need a connection.

Which expenses can I track?

Fuel, campsites, propane, groceries, repairs and more, with a monthly total, a yearly category breakdown and a list of recent expenses. Service entries also carry a cost and mileage, so your maintenance history and your spend build together.

Is the app available on iPhone?

Not at the moment. Van Life: RV Maintenance is available on Android through Google Play.
