The gap between band 5 and band 7 is often three phrases.

One screen in the app sets two answers to the same question side by side. The band 5 answer is grammatical and on topic and still stays short, because it never elaborates. Seeing what the longer answer adds is a faster lesson than a list of tips.

What it is

Background

How is IELTS Speaking marked, and how do you practise it alone?

The IELTS Speaking test is a short face-to-face conversation with an examiner, split into three parts: a Part 1 interview about everyday topics, a Part 2 cue card on which you speak on your own after a minute of preparation, and a Part 3 discussion with more abstract questions. Your answers are marked on four criteria: fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation. Because the skill is speaking aloud, practising in silence helps less than most people expect, and a patient practice partner that listens is what you need.

Part 1: interviewshort answers about you

The examiner asks familiar questions about home, work, study and hobbies. The common trap is replying in a single sentence. Extending each answer with a reason and an example is the simplest way to show more of your English.

Part 2: the cue cardyour two-minute talk

You receive a topic with prompts, prepare briefly and then talk without interruption. It tests whether you can organise ideas and keep going, so the practice that matters is speaking for the full time on topics you did not choose.

Part 3: discussionideas, not facts

The questions move from personal experience to opinions about society and trends. Candidates lose marks here by saying what they know instead of explaining what they think and why.

Lexical resource and pronunciationtwo of the four criteria

Lexical resource rewards a precise range of vocabulary used naturally, and pronunciation rewards being easy to follow, with sensible stress and rhythm. Neither improves from reading alone, because both depend on what actually comes out of your mouth.

How it works

How a practice session goes

Each session is about speaking, with the app listening and responding.

  1. Pick a part or start a mock test

Choose Part 1, Part 2 or Part 3, a pronunciation drill, or the full AI mock speaking test that runs Parts 1 to 3 in order. The home screen also shows your target band and streak.

  2. Answer exam-style questions out loud

Speak your answer as you would in the room. For the pronunciation drill you type a topic, such as travel or food, and the app writes a practice text at your level to read aloud.

  3. Read the feedback and go again

You get an estimated practice band with tips against fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. Practising a little each day, with reminders if you want them, builds the habit before the exam.

Fit

Who it's for — and who it isn't

A good fit if you

  • Are preparing for IELTS Speaking and have nobody to practise with on most days
  • Freeze on cue cards and want to rehearse talking for two minutes on an unknown topic
  • Want a regular speaking habit in short sessions rather than a weekly lesson
  • Aim for a specific band and want to see what a higher answer sounds like
  • Want to speak English more fluently and to hear your pronunciation assessed

Not the right tool if you

  • Need official scores or a certified result; band scores here are AI estimates for practice only
  • Want practice for the Listening, Reading or Writing sections; the app focuses on speaking
  • Expect all practice sets free: Pro unlocks the full mock tests and every Part 1, 2 and 3 set
  • Want a human examiner or teacher to give personal feedback

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is IELTS Speaking Practice & Prep?

IELTS Speaking Practice & Prep is an AI speaking coach for iPhone and Android, shown as Speak IELTS inside the app. It offers Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 practice, full AI mock speaking tests, a pronunciation drill and a vocabulary bank. It is free to start, with a Pro upgrade.

How do I practise IELTS speaking at home?

Say your answers aloud, do not only think them through, and do it regularly. In this app you pick a part, answer a question as you would in the exam and receive feedback on fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. Short daily sessions work better than a long weekly one because speaking is a habit.

Does the app give an official IELTS band score?

No. Band scores in the app are AI estimates intended for practice, and they are not official IELTS results. The app is an independent study aid and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia or Cambridge Assessment English. IELTS is a registered trademark of those organisations.

What does the AI mock speaking test include?

It runs the three parts in sequence: a Part 1 interview, a Part 2 cue card and a Part 3 discussion. You speak your answers, and the AI examiner, which listens to you, gives instant feedback against the four speaking criteria. It is the closest the app gets to rehearsing the whole test.

How does the app help with pronunciation?

The pronunciation drill generates a short text on a topic you choose, at your level. You read it aloud, and the AI listens to your fluency and accent and returns clear tips. It is practice for being easy to understand, not a promise to remove an accent.

Can it help me reach a higher band?

It can show you what to change. The app compares answers at different band levels, suggests ways to extend each reply with a reason and an example, and includes a Band 7+ vocabulary bank. No app can promise a particular score, since your result depends on how you speak on the day.

What is free and what is in Pro?

Free use lets you start practising, with daily limits on some features. Pro unlocks unlimited AI mock speaking tests, full band-score feedback and every Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 practice set. Subscriptions are billed monthly or yearly and renew automatically unless cancelled in your store account.

Is there IELTS vocabulary in the app?

Yes. IELTS Speaking Practice & Prep includes a Band 7+ vocabulary bank and an Essential Words list of 1,628 words that you can filter by level and word type. Each word has an Add to List button, so you can save the ones you want to use in your own answers.

Do I need to be a beginner or advanced to use it?

Neither. People aiming for band 6, band 7 or higher can use it, as can general English learners who want to speak more fluently. The pronunciation drill and the word list can be set to your level, and the target band on the home screen is yours to choose.

Does it work on both iPhone and Android?

Yes. IELTS Speaking Practice & Prep is available on the App Store, where it needs iOS 15.1 or later, and on Google Play. It carries a 4+ age rating.
