Golf Handicap: Round Tracker — A golf scorecard that shows where your strokes go

Golf Handicap: Round Tracker is a free golf scorecard and handicap calculator for iOS and Android. Score each hole with putts, fairways and greens in regulation, pin a green once to get a GPS distance to it on later rounds, and watch an estimated handicap index move as you play. An AI golf coach then reads the saved round and names the one thing to work on.

A round tells you your score. Fifteen rounds tell you your game.

One 88 hides whether the strokes went on the tee, around the green or on the putting surface. A golf scorecard that records putts, fairways, greens and misses for every hole turns a pile of cards into a pattern you can actually practise against.

What it is

Golf Handicap: Round Tracker is a free iOS and Android golf scorecard and handicap tracker. You enter each hole's score, putts, fairways hit, greens in regulation and penalties, and after three rounds the app estimates a handicap index from the best score differentials of your last 20. A GPS distance to a green you have pinned, per-round and season stats, practice logging and an optional AI golf coach are included. The index is an estimate for personal tracking, not an official handicap.

Background

How is a golf handicap index worked out, and what does a tracker add?

A handicap index is a number that describes your demonstrated scoring ability so golfers of different standards can compete fairly. Under World Handicap System rules it is built from score differentials: each round is compared with the difficulty of the course it was played on, and the best of your most recent differentials are averaged. An app can reproduce that arithmetic from your own scorecards, which is useful for seeing whether you are improving, but only your national golf association can issue an official index.

Course rating and slopethe two difficulty numbers

Course rating is the score a scratch golfer is expected to shoot from a set of tees. Slope rating describes how much harder the course plays for an average golfer than for a scratch golfer, on a scale where 113 is neutral. Both are printed on the scorecard, and both are needed to turn a gross score into a fair comparison.

Score differentialone number per round

The usual calculation is 113 divided by the slope rating, multiplied by your adjusted gross score minus the course rating. A 90 on a hard course can produce a lower differential than an 88 on an easy one, which is the whole point of the system.

Best of the last 20why one bad day barely counts

The index averages only the lowest handful of your last 20 differentials, with a small adjustment while you have few rounds on record. A single blow-up round drops out of the calculation as soon as better ones push it aside, so the index reflects what you can do rather than what you did on a bad Sunday.

Fairways, greens in regulation and puttsthe stats behind the score

A green in regulation means reaching the green in two strokes fewer than par. Counted alongside fairways hit and putts per round, it separates a ball-striking problem from a putting problem, which a total score on its own cannot do.

How it works

How a round works in the app

The setup is done once per course. After that a round is a hole-by-hole entry on the course and a few taps afterwards.

  1. Save the course once

Enter pars, hole lengths, stroke index, course rating and slope from the scorecard of a course you play, and every later round there starts pre-filled. The app downloads no course data, so every value on a saved course is yours. Standing on a green, you can pin it to that hole so the distance works on future rounds.

  2. Score hole by hole

Log the score, putts, fairway hit, green in regulation and penalties for each hole, and tag where a drive or approach missed: left, right, short or long. The card is saved after every change, so a locked screen does not lose the round. Choose nine or eighteen holes, label the round casual, competition or practice, and decide whether it counts toward your index.

  3. Read the numbers, then practise

Once three rounds are saved the estimated index appears, and the stats tab shows scoring average, average to par, fairways, greens, putts and three-putts. Between rounds you can log range, putting, chipping, bunker and fitness sessions and set season targets such as breaking 90.

Fit

Who it's for — and who it isn't

A good fit if you

  • Want a golf score tracker that keeps putts, fairways and greens, not only the total
  • Play a few home courses and would like each one saved with its own pars, rating and slope
  • Want to see whether your game is trending the right way between rounds
  • Would like a GPS distance to the green without buying course maps
  • Practise on your own and want a log of range and putting sessions next to your scores

Not the right tool if you

  • Need an official handicap for league or tournament entry; the index here is an estimate and cannot be used for eligibility
  • Expect a certified laser rangefinder; GPS distances are estimates from your phone and should not be relied on in competition
  • Want course maps and hazard layouts downloaded for you; the app uses values you enter
  • Want a cloud backup of every round; scores are stored on the phone and removed if you uninstall

Privacy

Where your rounds are stored

Scores, saved courses and practice sessions are kept on your phone, with no cloud backup, so uninstalling the app removes them. When you ask the AI coach for an analysis, plan or digest, your stats such as scores, putts, fairways, greens, penalties and dates are sent through the app's server to a third-party AI service; course names and location are not passed to it.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to keep a golf scorecard on a phone?

Use an app that records more than the total for each hole, because putts, fairways and greens are what show you where shots are lost. Golf Handicap: Round Tracker saves the card after every change so a locked screen does not lose the round, supports nine or eighteen holes, and lets you tag each miss as left, right, short or long. Saved courses start every later round pre-filled with pars, stroke indexes, rating and slope.

How does Golf Handicap: Round Tracker estimate my handicap index?

Save at least three rounds on courses that have a rating and slope entered, and the app computes a score differential for each. It then averages the best differentials of your last 20 rounds, applying the small adjustment used while you have few rounds on record. You can also see what your next score would do to the index and which old round is about to drop out of the calculation.

Is the handicap index an official handicap?

No. The index in Golf Handicap: Round Tracker is an estimate for personal tracking only. The app is not affiliated with the USGA, the R&A or any golf handicap authority, so the number cannot be used for tournament or league eligibility. It is meant for golfers who simply want an honest view of whether their scores are improving.

Does the golf GPS need course maps or a download?

No maps are downloaded. You stand on or near the centre of a green, tap Mark the Green, and that point is saved to the hole of your saved course. On later rounds the app shows your live distance to it in yards or meters using your phone's GPS. Distances are estimates from the device, not a certified rangefinder, so do not rely on them in competition.

Is Golf Handicap: Round Tracker free?

The core is free: unlimited scorecards, saved courses, GPS distances, the estimated index, stats and the practice log, supported by ads. The first AI round analysis is included, and a free player can earn one more each week by watching a rewarded ad. Pro is a monthly or annual subscription that adds unlimited analysis, practice plans, advanced trends, CSV export and no ads, and the price is shown before you buy.

What does the AI golf coach actually do?

After a round is saved, the coach reads your numbers and writes a short summary: where the strokes went, which misses cost the most and the one thing to work on next. With at least three rounds it also builds a weekly practice plan from a fixed library of golf drills, and you can check off a drill to log it as practice. It works from your own stats, so treat it as a practice guide rather than swing instruction from a teacher.

Which golf stats does the app calculate?

Golf Handicap: Round Tracker shows scoring average, average to par, best round, fairways hit, greens in regulation, putts per round, three-putt rate and penalties, for one round or the whole season. It also splits each card into off the tee, approach, around the green and putting, worst first, and shows your miss pattern, such as how many tee misses go right.

Can I use it for nine-hole rounds and practice rounds?

Yes. A round can be nine or eighteen holes and can be labelled casual, competition or practice. You decide which rounds count toward your estimated index, and a round left out still stays in your history and stats. Net score and Stableford points are available on saved courses that include stroke indexes.

Does it work between rounds and in the off-season?

Yes. The practice log records range, putting, chipping, bunker and fitness sessions with a duration and notes, and you can set season targets such as breaking a score or getting your index under a number. That keeps a record running through the winter, so the next round starts from a log rather than from memory.

Where is my data stored, and can I export it?

Scores, courses and practice sessions are stored on your phone, with no cloud backup, so uninstalling the app removes them. Pro can export a CSV file of your season, which is the way to keep a copy. Sign-in is optional, and only your stats, not course names or location, are sent when you ask the AI coach for an analysis.
