The question is never 'what's a good cocktail' — it's 'what can I make with this'.
A recipe book assumes a fully stocked bar. A home bar rarely is one. The useful question flips the search around: given exactly what's on the shelf tonight, what's actually makeable, and what's one bottle away.
What it is
Cocktails: Home Bartender is a free iOS and Android app that matches cocktail and mocktail recipes to the ingredients you actually own. You check off the spirits, liqueurs, mixers and garnishes in your home bar from a list of around 90 ingredients, and the app shows every recipe you can make right now from a library of more than 120, plus the ones missing just one ingredient. Each recipe lists the glass, the method, the measures and the steps. An AI Bartender can also suggest matches from a plain-language description of what you're craving. It is a recipe and mixology reference for adults of legal drinking age, and does not sell or deliver alcohol.

What it looks like

Background
How do you actually build a usable home bar?
Most home bars grow by accident — a bottle bought for one recipe, a gift, something left over from a party — rather than by plan, which is why so many end up with five bottles that cannot make more than two or three drinks between them. A more useful approach treats the bar as a small, deliberately chosen set of spirits and mixers picked for how many recipes they unlock together, not how interesting any single bottle looks on the shelf.
Base spirits firstthe backbone of most recipes
Vodka, gin, white rum, tequila and a whiskey cover the base of the large majority of well-known cocktails. A bar with those five spirits and a handful of common mixers already makes dozens of standard recipes, before a single specialty liqueur is added.
The next-bottle questionnot every bottle unlocks the same amount
Not every bottle is equally valuable to add next. One liqueur might unlock three new recipes from what you already have; another, equally priced, might unlock none. Working out which bottle to buy next by hand means cross-checking every recipe's ingredient list against your shelf.
Measures and method matter as much as ingredientsshaken, stirred, built, blended
Two cocktails can share nearly the same ingredients and taste completely different because of the ratio and the method — a Daiquiri and a Margarita are structurally close, a shaken sour built around different spirits and citrus. Getting the measures and the correct method right matters as much as having the right bottles.
Mocktails use the same structuresours, highballs, spritzes without the alcohol
Alcohol-free drinks generally follow the same families as their alcoholic counterparts — a sour balance of sweet and sour, a highball topped with something carbonated — which is why a well-built cocktail app can cover mocktails as a genuine category rather than an afterthought.
How it works
How the app is used
Build the bar once; after that, finding tonight's drink is a tap, not a search through recipes you can't actually make.
Check off your bar
Go through spirits, liqueurs, mixers and garnishes organized by category with search, and mark what you actually own. Smart Shopping then suggests the single next bottle that unlocks the most new recipes, so a purchase is never wasted on a bottle that only completes one drink.
See what you can make
A 'Can Make' list shows every cocktail and mocktail buildable right now from your checked ingredients, and a second list shows recipes missing just one item and names it. Each recipe gives the glass, method and step-by-step instructions.
Explore, rate and ask the AI Bartender
Browse and filter the full recipe library by base spirit or switch on Mocktails Only, rate drinks by taste so recommendations adjust, and save favorites. Or describe what you're craving in plain language and let the AI Bartender suggest matches from your real bar and taste profile.

Fit
Who it's for — and who it isn't
A good fit if you
- Are stocking a first home bar and want to know which bottle to buy next, not just a recipe list
- Already have a shelf of spirits and want to see what you can actually make tonight
- Are planning drinks for guests and want a menu your bar can really serve
- Want alcohol-free options alongside cocktails rather than a separate app
- Are of legal drinking age in your country and treat drinking responsibly as non-negotiable
Not the right tool if you
- Are under the legal drinking age in your country — this app is intended for adults only
- Want the app to sell, ship or deliver alcohol — it is a recipe and mixology reference only
- Want unlimited AI Bartender requests for free — three a month are free, more is Pro
- Want the app to replace your own judgment about how much to drink or whether to drive afterward
Safety and limits
Drink responsibly
Cocktails: Home Bartender is a recipe and mixology reference. It does not sell, ship or deliver alcohol, and it is intended for adults of legal drinking age in their country or region.
The app does not and cannot verify your age or decide how much you should drink. Every recipe and AI suggestion carries a reminder to drink responsibly, and the app is not a substitute for your own judgment about your limits, your health, or any medication you take.
Never drink and drive. If you or someone with you has been drinking, arrange another way home. If you are pregnant, have a health condition, or are unsure whether alcohol is safe for you, speak with a doctor before drinking.
Privacy
What leaves your device
Your bar list, favorites and taste settings are stored on your device, and the full recipe library is built into the app and works offline once loaded. AI Bartender requests are sent to CoddyKit's server to generate suggestions based on your bar and taste profile.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
What's a good app for finding cocktails you can actually make at home?
The useful feature is matching recipes to what's really on your shelf, not just listing drinks in general. Cocktails: Home Bartender does this by having you check off the spirits, liqueurs and mixers you own, then showing every recipe from a library of more than 120 that you can make right now, plus the ones missing just one ingredient. It also suggests the next bottle worth buying. Free on iOS and Android, for adults of legal drinking age.
How does the app know what I can make?
You check off each spirit, liqueur, mixer and garnish you actually own from a list of around 90 ingredients, organized by category with search. The app then cross-references your checked list against its full recipe library and shows a 'Can Make' list of everything buildable right now, plus a separate list of recipes missing exactly one item.
What does Smart Shopping do?
It looks at your current bar and the full recipe library, and suggests the single next bottle that would unlock the most new recipes — rather than leaving you to guess which bottle is worth buying. It is meant to make a purchase count, since not every bottle at the same price unlocks the same number of drinks.
Does the app have mocktail recipes?
Yes. The recipe library includes alcohol-free mocktail recipes alongside the cocktails, and you can switch on Mocktails Only to browse just those. Mocktails generally follow the same structural families as their alcoholic counterparts, such as sours and highballs, built without the spirit.
What does the AI Bartender do?
You describe what you're craving in plain language — for example, 'something sour, gin-based, with what I have' — and the AI Bartender suggests matches drawn from your real bar inventory and taste profile, showing exactly what each suggestion uses from your shelf and what, if anything, is missing. A limited number of requests are included free each month; Pro members get unlimited requests.
Is Cocktails: Home Bartender free?
Yes. My Bar, What Can Make, the full recipe library, drink families, technique tips, favorites, Host Mode and a limited number of AI Bartender requests per month are free, and the free version shows ads. Pro is an optional monthly or annual subscription that adds unlimited AI Bartender requests, batch scaling for a crowd, saving every party menu, and no ads.
What is Host Mode?
You say how many guests are coming, including those not drinking alcohol, and Host Mode builds a three-drink cocktail menu that your current bar can actually serve, along with a shopping list for anything missing and a suggested prep order. It is meant for planning ahead of a party rather than deciding drink by drink on the night.
Is this app only for people who already know how to make cocktails?
No. Every recipe lists the glass, the method — shaken, stirred, built or blended — the exact measures and step-by-step instructions, which is enough for someone making a drink for the first time. The app also explains drink families like sours and highballs and flags common technique mistakes, for anyone who wants to understand the structure rather than just follow one recipe.
Does the app sell or deliver alcohol?
No. Cocktails: Home Bartender is a recipe and mixology reference only. It does not sell, ship or deliver alcohol in any form, and it is intended for adults of legal drinking age in their own country or region. Buying any ingredient it suggests happens entirely outside the app.
Does it work without an internet connection?
The bar tracker, the recipe library, What Can Make, Explore and favorites all work fully offline once loaded, which matters at a bar cart or in a kitchen with patchy Wi-Fi. The AI Bartender is the one feature that needs an internet connection, since it sends your request to generate a suggestion.
