How Affiliate Marketing Works
Understand the affiliate ecosystem — merchants, publishers, networks, and tracking.
The Affiliate Marketing Model
Affiliate marketing involves three parties: the merchant (brand selling a product), the affiliate (publisher who promotes it), and the customer (who makes a purchase). The affiliate earns a commission only when a defined action, usually a sale or lead, is completed.
This performance-based structure makes affiliate marketing attractive to merchants because they pay only for results, and to affiliates because they can earn revenue from content they have already created.
Affiliate Tracking via Links and Cookies
Each affiliate receives a unique tracking link that identifies them as the referring source. When a visitor clicks the link and visits the merchant's site, a tracking cookie is placed in their browser, recording the affiliate's ID.
If the visitor completes a purchase within the cookie window, the affiliate is credited with the conversion and earns the agreed commission. This system allows accurate attribution without requiring affiliates to handle any transactions themselves.
