A Crowded Toolbox

Ansible is not alone. Puppet, Chef, and Terraform also automate infrastructure, but they solve overlapping problems differently.

Two Big Questions

When comparing tools, ask two things: do they need an agent, and do they manage config or provision the infrastructure itself?

Puppet Is Agent-Based

Puppet installs an agent on each node that pulls its desired state from a central server on a schedule. It is mature but heavier to set up.

Chef Uses Ruby Recipes

Chef is also agent and pull-based, with config written as Ruby recipes. Powerful, but it expects you to be comfortable in Ruby.

Ansible Is Agentless YAML

Ansible needs no agent and is push-based, with plays written in readable YAML. That low barrier is its biggest selling point.

Config Management vs Provisioning

Puppet, Chef, and Ansible mainly do configuration management: shaping servers that already exist. Terraform plays a different role.

Terraform Provisions

Terraform creates the infrastructure itself: VMs, networks, and load balancers from cloud APIs. It builds the boxes Ansible then configures.

Terraform Tracks State

Terraform keeps a state file mapping code to real cloud resources, so it knows what to create, change, or destroy on each run.

Not Either-Or

These tools often combine: Terraform provisions the servers, then Ansible installs and configures the software running on them.

Ansible Can Provision Too

Ansible has cloud modules that can create resources, so it overlaps with Terraform. Many teams still prefer Terraform for pure provisioning.

Why Start With Ansible

For learning, Ansible wins on simplicity: no agents to deploy, readable YAML, and instant results over SSH you already have.

Quick Check

Which tool's main job is provisioning cloud infrastructure and tracking it with a state file?

Recap

Puppet and Chef are agent-based; Ansible is agentless YAML. Terraform provisions, Ansible configures, and they pair well. 🎯
