No Agent Required
Ansible's headline idea is that it is agentless: you do not install any daemon or extra software on the machines you manage.
It Rides on SSH
To reach a Linux node, Ansible just uses plain SSH, the same protocol you already log in with. No new ports, no new service.
Windows Uses WinRM
For Windows hosts, Ansible swaps SSH for WinRM. Either way it leans on the machine's existing remote-management channel.
Push, Not Pull
Ansible is push-based: your control node connects out and drives the work. Agents do not phone home asking for instructions.
The Control Node
One machine, the control node, has Ansible installed. It is the only place you need the software, and it orchestrates everything.
Managed Nodes Stay Clean
The servers you control are managed nodes. They need only SSH and Python, both usually present already on Linux.
How a Task Runs
Ansible copies a small module to the node over SSH, runs it, collects the JSON result, then deletes it. Nothing lingers behind.
Less Attack Surface
No always-on agent means no extra daemon to patch or exploit. Agentless design shrinks your attack surface and upkeep.
Easy to Adopt
If you can SSH to a box, you can manage it with Ansible today. There is no bootstrap agent rollout blocking your start.
Your First Connection
A quick ping over SSH proves Ansible can reach a host. No agent was installed to make this work.
ansible all -i inventory.ini -m pingThe Trade-Off
Push means changes apply when you run Ansible, not continuously. For most teams that on-demand control is exactly what they want.
Quick Check
What does Ansible normally use to connect to and run tasks on a Linux managed node?
Recap
Ansible is agentless and push-based: a control node drives managed nodes over SSH, runs a module, and cleans up. 🎯
