Puffy: a one-tap thinking-of-you app for the people closest to you

Puffy is a free app for sending a Puff β€” a one-tap signal that says I'm thinking of you. No long messages, no feed, no pressure to reply. Connections are mutual, location sharing is consent-based and foreground-only, and you can start as a guest in seconds.

Not a chat app, not a tracker.

Puffy deliberately has no chat history, no unread badges, and no feed to scroll. A Puff arrives, you can Puff back, and that is the whole interaction β€” the smallest way to stay in touch.

What it is

Puffy: Thinking of You is a free iOS and Android app for sending a Puff β€” a one-tap signal that tells someone they are on your mind. The recipient gets a gentle notification and can Puff back, optionally with a feeling like a hug, miss you, good luck, or coffee. It also offers consent-based location sharing you can start and stop at any time.

Background

What is an ambient thinking-of-you app?

Ambient apps carry a signal instead of a conversation. Rather than composing a message, you send a single gesture that means you crossed my mind β€” the other person knows they were thought of, and nobody owes a reply. The appeal is low effort and low obligation: staying present with a few close people without the maintenance a group chat or a social feed demands.

Puffthe core gesture

A single tap that sends a soft notification to one of your favorite people. It starts no conversation and needs no reply, and the other person can answer it with a Puff back.

Mutual connectionconsent by default

A link that exists only because both people agreed to it. On Puffy nobody can add you or see you without your okay, and blocking or reporting someone takes a tap.

Consent-based location sharingyou pick the window

Sharing you switch on deliberately for a chosen period β€” once, an hour, the day, or always β€” and switch off whenever you want, rather than a setting somebody else controls.

Foreground sharingno background tracking

Puffy shares your location only while you have chosen to share it. It states plainly that it does not track you in the background and never shares your location secretly.

How it works

Three steps, and then it stays out of the way

Puffy has very little to set up. You connect with someone, you send a Puff, and location sharing sits separately as something you switch on only when you want it.

  1. Connect with someone

Sync your contacts to see who is already on Puffy, search by username, or send an invite link that lasts seven days. The connection exists only once you both agree β€” nobody can add you without your okay. The free tier covers one favorite person.

  2. Send a Puff

Tap once and a soft notification lands on their phone. Add a feeling β€” a hug, miss you, good luck, coffee β€” when you want to say a little more. They can Puff back in seconds, or not at all. Nothing is owed either way.

  3. Share location only if you want to

Location is separate and optional. Choose once, an hour, the day, or always, and stop at any time. You can also ask someone to share theirs, and they decide whether to say yes. Puffy does not track you in the background.

What’s inside

What is actually in the app

1

One tap, one Puff

Unlimited Puffs and Puff backs on the free tier, with basic feelings like a hug, miss you, good luck, or coffee when a tap alone is not enough.

4

Four sharing windows

Share your location once, for an hour, for the day, or always β€” and stop with one tap. Sharing is foreground and never happens secretly in the background.

24h

Recent location history

A Premium feature that shows the last 24 hours, and only if the other person has clearly allowed it. They can revoke or delete that access at any time.

7d

Finding your people

Contact sync, username search, and an invite link that lasts seven days. Every connection is mutual, and blocking or reporting someone takes a single tap.

5

Sign in your way

Start as a guest in seconds, or create a full account with a phone number, email, Google, Apple, or Facebook β€” whichever you prefer to use.

3d

Premium, trial first

Premium starts with a 3-day free trial, then a monthly or yearly plan you cancel in your device's subscription settings. It never bypasses anyone's consent.

Fit

Who it’s for β€” and who it isn’t

A good fit if you

  • Want to stay close to a partner, parent, or best friend without starting a chat every time
  • Are tired of feeds and unread badges but still want to feel connected
  • Want location sharing that you switch on deliberately and switch off in a tap
  • Would rather try something as a guest than sign up before you know if you like it
  • Are far from someone and want a small daily signal rather than a scheduled call

Not the right tool if you

  • Want a real messaging app β€” Puffy has no chat, no threads, and no message history
  • Are looking to meet new people; it is not a dating app and has no discovery feed
  • Want to keep tabs on where someone is β€” location is theirs to grant and revoke, and there is no background tracking
  • Need more than one favorite person without paying, since the free tier covers one

Privacy

What is shared, and who decides

Every connection on Puffy is mutual, so nobody can add you or see you without your okay. Location is shared only when you choose, for a window you pick, in the foreground β€” Puffy states it never tracks you in the background or shares your location secretly. Premium's 24-hour history requires the other person's clear consent, and they can revoke or delete it at any time. Contacts and location shares are never sold to third parties.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What's the best app for sending someone a quick thinking-of-you?

A good one takes a second to use, creates no obligation to reply, and does not quietly collect anything in the background. Puffy is built that way: one tap sends a Puff, the other person gets a soft notification and can Puff back or leave it, and location sharing stays off until you deliberately turn it on for a window you pick. It is free on iPhone and Android, and you can start as a guest.

Why send a Puff instead of just texting?

A text asks for something back. Even a short one opens a thread, shows read receipts, and leaves a small debt of a reply hanging between two people. A one-tap signal carries the same meaning β€” you crossed my mind β€” with none of that weight. It suits the relationships you want to keep warm daily but do not want to turn into a conversation every single time, like a partner mid-workday or a parent in another country.

How do you stay close to long-distance friends and family?

The habit that works is frequency over length. Small, regular signals keep a relationship present far better than an occasional long catch-up, because they need no scheduling and no energy from either side. Time zones make this harder, which is why something that does not demand a reply travels well. Puffy is built for exactly that pattern: a tap that says you are on my mind, answered whenever the other person happens to look.

Is location sharing on Puffy safe? Can someone see where I am without me knowing?

No. Location sharing is off until you turn it on, and you choose how long it lasts: once, for an hour, for the day, or always. You can stop it at any time with one tap. Sharing is foreground and consent-based, and Puffy states it never tracks you in the background or shares your location secretly. Someone can ask you to share, but asking is all they can do β€” you decide whether to say yes.

Is Puffy free?

Yes. Puffy is free to download on the App Store and Google Play. The free tier includes one favorite person, unlimited Puffs and Puff backs, basic feelings, manual location sharing and location requests, contact sync, username search, invite links, block and report, and core privacy controls. Puffy Premium is an optional subscription that adds more on top of that.

Do I need an account to use Puffy?

Not to get started. You can begin as a guest in seconds and try the app first. If you want a full account, you can create one with a phone number, an email address, or a Google, Apple, or Facebook sign-in. Connections are mutual either way, so nobody can link to you or see you without your explicit okay.

What does Puffy Premium include?

Premium adds recent 24-hour location history that works only with the other person's clear consent, more favorite people so your close circle can grow beyond one, custom Puff styles and premium feelings, personal notes on your Puffs, an ad-free experience, and advanced privacy controls. It starts with a 3-day free trial and then continues on the monthly or yearly plan you picked. You cancel it in your device's subscription settings.

Can Premium let someone see my location history without my permission?

No. Premium never bypasses consent. Someone can only see your recent location history if you have clearly allowed it, and you can revoke or delete that access at any time. Paying for the subscription changes what a person can be shown once you have agreed β€” it does not change who decides. The decision stays with the person whose location it is.

Is Puffy a dating app or a messaging app?

Neither. It is built for people you already know and choose β€” close friends, family, a partner. There is no discovery feed, no stranger matching, and no chat: no threads, no message history, and no unread badges to clear. A Puff, an optional feeling, and a Puff back are the whole vocabulary. If you need a real conversation, you will still want a messaging app alongside it.

What phones does Puffy run on, and how are the notifications?

Puffy runs on iPhone and Android. Notifications are intentionally gentle rather than noisy: you pick the sound a Puff arrives with β€” default, gentle chime, bright chime, or silent β€” and toggle Puff, location, and Premium notifications separately in Settings. You can also pin a quick-puff notification for your favorite person so a Puff can be sent without opening the app.
