A game is ten frames with up to two rolls each at ten pins. Knock all ten down with the first ball and it is a strike, worth 10 plus your next two rolls. Clear them with the second ball and it is a spare, worth 10 plus your next roll. Leave anything standing and the frame is open, worth only the pins you felled. In the tenth frame a strike or a spare earns a third ball, which is why a strike there can be worth up to 30.

Averages are personal, but the rough shape is familiar. Casual bowlers who go a few times a year often land somewhere in the 100s. Regular league bowlers commonly average in the 150 to 180 range, and a 200-plus league average is genuinely strong. What matters more than the absolute number is the direction over a season, since average is simply total pinfall divided by games bowled and moves slowly once you have a lot of games behind it.

A 300 is twelve consecutive strikes: one in each of the first nine frames, then three in the tenth. It works out that way because a strike is worth 10 plus the next two rolls, so a run of them is worth 30 a frame. Nothing less than twelve in a row gets there, which is why the tenth frame carries so much pressure. Three 300 games in one series is the maximum 900, and it is exceedingly rare.

A split is a first-ball leave where the headpin is down and two or more standing pins have a gap between them. The 7-10 is the famous one, with a pin in each back corner. Others come up far more often: the baby split (2-7 or 3-10), the bucket (2-4-5-8 for a right-hander), and the big four (4-6-7-10). A 1-2-10 leave with the headpin still standing is a washout, which is scored as a normal spare attempt rather than a split.

Handicap leagues level the field by giving lower-average bowlers extra pins. The usual formula takes a basis score set by the league, subtracts your current average, and multiplies the difference by a percentage — often something like 90 percent of the gap from a 220 basis. A bowler averaging 160 in that example would receive 54 pins per game. The exact basis and percentage vary by league, so check the rules your secretary works from before assuming a figure.

A clean game is one with no open frames — every frame is marked with a strike or a spare. It is the most reliable way to raise an average, because a missed single pin costs you twice: the pins left standing and the bonus the spare would have carried. All spares behind a nine-count first ball scores 190, which is a better night than a handful of strikes scattered among open frames.
