What are Binary Formats?
When you compile a program, it becomes a binary file. This isn't just a random collection of bytes! It's structured in a specific way, following a binary file format.
These formats are like blueprints. They tell the operating system (OS) how to load, link, and execute the program correctly. Understanding them is crucial for reverse engineering.
Why File Formats are Key
Binary formats define where different parts of a program live: the actual executable code, initialized data, read-only data, resources, and more.
As a reverse engineer, knowing the file format allows you to navigate the binary, locate functions, extract strings, and identify important data structures within the file.
ELF: Linux & Unix Standard
The Executable and Linkable Format (ELF) is the standard binary format for Unix-like systems, including Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris. It's highly flexible and used for executables, shared libraries, object code, and core dumps.
Its design allows for efficient loading and execution on various architectures.
Inside an ELF File
Key components of an ELF file include:
- ELF Header: Contains metadata like architecture, entry point address, and version.
- Program Header Table: Describes how the OS should load segments (collections of sections) into memory.
- Section Header Table: Details all the sections within the file.
- .text: Holds the program's executable machine code.
- .data: Stores initialized global and static variables.
- .rodata: Contains read-only data, such as string literals.
PE: The Windows Standard
The Portable Executable (PE) format is the standard binary format for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows operating systems. It's used for executables (.exe), DLLs (.dll), and object files.
PE is a modified version of the Common Object File Format (COFF) and plays a similar role to ELF on Windows.
Inside a PE File
Key components of a PE file include:
- DOS Header: A small header for backward compatibility with MS-DOS.
- PE Header: Contains the 'PE\0\0' signature and file header information.
- Optional Header: Crucial for loading, contains the entry point address, image base, and section alignment info.
- Section Table: Lists and describes all the sections in the PE file.
- .text: Contains the executable machine code.
- .data: Stores initialized global and static data.
- .rsrc: Holds application resources like icons, menus, and dialogs.
Mach-O: macOS & iOS
Mach-O (Mach Object) is the native executable format for Apple operating systems, including macOS, iOS, watchOS, and tvOS. It's based on the Mach kernel's object format.
Mach-O files are typically identified by their 'magic number' at the beginning of the file, similar to ELF and PE.
Inside a Mach-O File
Key components of a Mach-O file include:
- Mach-O Header: Specifies the target architecture (e.g., x86_64, ARM64) and the number of load commands.
- Load Commands: These are critical! They tell the dynamic linker how to set up the process, including defining segments, specifying shared libraries, and setting the entry point.
- __TEXT segment: Contains the executable code and read-only data.
- __DATA segment: Holds writable data.
- __LINKEDIT segment: Contains symbol and string tables used for dynamic linking.
Key Differences at a Glance
While all three formats organize code and data, they have distinct characteristics:
- ELF: Highly flexible, uses Program and Section Header Tables for loading and structure. Common on Linux/Unix.
- PE: Windows-specific, includes a legacy DOS header, and relies heavily on the Optional Header for loading details.
- Mach-O: Apple OS, its Load Commands are central to how the OS and dynamic linker process the binary.
Each is optimized for its respective OS environment.

Which of the following sections or segments are primarily responsible for storing the program's executable machine code in their respective binary file formats?
Recap: Binary Format Basics
We've explored three crucial binary file formats:
- ELF: Standard for Linux/Unix, with headers and sections like
.textand.data. - PE: Standard for Windows, featuring DOS, PE, and Optional Headers, and sections like
.textand.rsrc. - Mach-O: Standard for Apple OS, utilizing a header and critical Load Commands to define segments like
__TEXTand__DATA.
Understanding these structures is fundamental for effective reverse engineering!
