The Capstone Goal
You are about to build a real smart-home sensor: it reads the room, sends data to the cloud, and you can update it wirelessly. Let's plan it first. 🚀
Why Plan First
A good architecture sketch saves hours of rewiring and rewriting. You decide what each part does before you touch a single wire.
Four Layers of an IoT Device
Most IoT projects share four layers: the sensors, the board that reads them, the network, and the cloud that stores and shows the data.
Layer 1: The Sensors
Start with what you want to know. Here a DHT sensor reads temperature and humidity, the raw signal your whole project is built around.
Layer 2: The Board
An ESP32 is your brain here: it reads the sensor and has built-in WiFi, so one chip handles sensing and connecting to the network.
Layer 3: The Network
The board joins your WiFi and speaks MQTT, a tiny messaging protocol perfect for sending small readings often without wasting power.
Layer 4: The Cloud
A cloud dashboard receives your messages, stores the history, and draws charts so you can watch the room from anywhere.
Draw the Data Flow
Picture one arrow per hop: sensor → board → WiFi → cloud → your phone. If you can draw it, you can build it.
List Your Parts
Before wiring, write a quick bill of materials: ESP32, DHT22, a pull-up resistor, jumper wires, and a USB cable to flash the first sketch.
Plan the Update Path
Because the device will live on a shelf, plan for OTA updates from day one so you never need to unplug it to fix a bug.
Name Your MQTT Topics
Decide topic names now, like home/livingroom/temp. Clear names keep the cloud side simple when you publish and subscribe later.
home/livingroom/temp
home/livingroom/humidity
home/livingroom/relayQuick Check
Time to test your plan.
Recap
You mapped four layers, sketched the data flow, listed your parts, and named your topics. With a clear plan, building the node comes next. 🧭
