Take It Live

Your device works on the bench. Now you deploy it: run it on battery, watch it from afar, and update it without ever touching the USB cable. 🏠

Power It for the Field

Off your laptop now. Give the node a steady power source, a USB adapter or a battery pack sized for how long it must run.

Sleep to Save Battery

For battery life, add deep sleep: wake, sample, send, then power down most of the chip until the next reading is due.

esp_sleep_enable_timer_wakeup(60 * 1000000);
esp_deep_sleep_start();

Enable OTA Updates

So you never unplug it again, turn on ArduinoOTA in setup(). New firmware can now be pushed across WiFi.

ArduinoOTA.begin();

Service OTA in the Loop

OTA needs a heartbeat. Call ArduinoOTA.handle() each loop so the device stays ready to accept a wireless upload.

void loop() {
  ArduinoOTA.handle();
}

Monitor Health, Not Just Data

Publish a heartbeat topic alongside readings. If it goes quiet, you instantly know the device dropped offline.

client.publish("home/livingroom/status", "alive");

Watch Signal & Uptime

Report extras like WiFi signal strength and uptime. Weak signal often explains a node that keeps dropping its connection.

long rssi = WiFi.RSSI();

Plan a Safe Rollback

Updates can go wrong. Keep the last good firmware so you can roll back fast if a new build misbehaves in the field.

Secure the Whole Thing

A live device is a target. Keep secrets out of code, use TLS for cloud links, and require a password for OTA uploads.

ArduinoOTA.setPassword("strongSecret");

Control It Remotely

From your dashboard, send a command and confirm the node acts on it. Flipping a relay from your phone proves remote control end to end.

You Shipped It

Sensing, cloud, alerts, battery, OTA, and security all in one device. You just built a complete, connected smart-home sensor. 🎉

Quick Check

Final check on running in the field.

Recap

You powered it, added sleep, enabled OTA, monitored health, secured it, and controlled it remotely. Your capstone device is truly in the field. 🚀
