Words Have Jobs
Every word in a sentence plays a role. A part of speech is the grammatical job a word does, like naming a thing or showing an action.
Nouns Name Things
A noun names a person, place, thing, or idea. In The cat sleeps, the noun is cat because it names the thing doing something. 🐱
Verbs Show Action
A verb expresses an action or a state of being. In The cat sleeps, the verb is sleeps because it tells you what the cat does.
Adjectives Describe
An adjective describes a noun, adding detail like color or size. In the fluffy cat, the word fluffy tells you more about the cat.
Adverbs Modify Actions
An adverb describes how, when, or where something happens. In the cat sleeps quietly, the word quietly tells you how it sleeps.
The Same Word, Different Roles
One word can play different roles. Book is a noun in read the book, but a verb in book a flight. Context decides its job.
Why Machines Need Tags
A computer sees only characters, not grammar. POS tagging labels each word with its part of speech so software can reason about sentence structure.
Tags Power Real Features
POS tags drive useful tools: finding all the verbs in a review, or pulling noun phrases as keywords. The tag tells you which words to keep. 🔍
A Shared Tag Set
NLP tools use standard labels so results stay consistent. The Universal POS set uses short codes like NOUN, VERB, ADJ, and ADV across many languages.
tags = {"cat": "NOUN", "sleeps": "VERB", "quietly": "ADV"}Coarse vs Fine Tags
Coarse tags like VERB are broad. Fine-grained tags add detail, such as marking a verb as past tense or third-person singular for deeper analysis.
Tags as Features
You can feed POS tags into a model as features. Knowing a word is a verb versus a noun often helps the model classify text more accurately.
Quick Check
Let us test your grasp of parts of speech.
Recap
You learned that words have grammatical jobs and that POS tagging labels each one. These tags give machines the structure they need to understand text. 🎉
