Zapier: Triggers & Actions

Every automation in Zapier is called a Zap. A Zap consists of at least two parts:

  • Trigger: The event that starts your Zap. E.g., "New email in Gmail."
  • Action: The event your Zap performs after the trigger. E.g., "Create a new row in Google Sheets."

These simple steps combine to automate complex tasks.

Introducing Make (Integromat)

Make (formerly Integromat) is another powerful no-code automation platform. It's known for its highly visual workflow builder and advanced capabilities.

Make allows you to design complex automations, called Scenarios, by dragging and dropping modules to create intricate data flows.

Make's interface stands out with its visual builder. Instead of a linear "if this, then that," you'll see a canvas where you connect app modules like building blocks.

This visual approach helps you clearly see the entire flow of data and logic in your Scenarios.

Make: Modules & Scenarios

In Make, an automation is called a Scenario. Scenarios are built using Modules.

  • Modules: Represent actions or triggers for specific apps. E.g., "Watch new emails" (trigger) or "Create a record" (action).
  • Operations: Each time a module processes data, it counts as an operation.

Make's visual nature allows for complex branching and routing of data.

Zapier vs. Make: Design Philosophies

While both platforms automate, their design philosophies differ:

  • Zapier: Focuses on simplicity and ease of use. It's event-driven, often best for straightforward "one-to-one" automations.
  • Make: Offers more flexibility and control with its visual builder. It excels at complex, multi-step workflows with conditional logic and data manipulation.
