Building Executive Marketing Dashboards
Design dashboards that communicate marketing performance and ROI to stakeholders.
What Executives Need to See
Executives need dashboards that answer business questions — how much revenue did marketing generate, what does it cost to acquire a customer, what is the return on our marketing investment — not marketing vanity metrics like impressions, followers, or page views.
The first step in building an executive dashboard is interviewing the executive audience: what decisions do they make with this data, and what format helps them reach those decisions fastest?
Choosing a Dashboard Tool
Looker Studio (free, Google-native) is excellent for teams already in the Google ecosystem with straightforward data connections. Tableau offers superior visualization flexibility and handles complex data models. Power BI integrates deeply with Microsoft Office environments.
Tool selection should be driven by where your data lives, your team's existing skills, and the technical sophistication of your stakeholder audience — the best dashboard is one people actually trust and use.
