Debug、ReleaseSafe、ReleaseFast

Zig offers four build modes that tune the balance between safety, speed, and size. You pick one with a single flag when you compile.

If you choose nothing, Zig uses Debug. It compiles fast and keeps every safety check on, so bugs are caught loudly while you develop.

You request a mode with the -O flag followed by its name. This single switch changes how aggressively the compiler optimizes.

The ReleaseSafe mode turns on optimizations but keeps runtime safety checks. You get speed while overflow and bounds errors still trap.

The ReleaseFast mode optimizes hard and drops most safety checks. It is the choice when raw performance matters more than guardrails.

The fourth mode, ReleaseSmall, optimizes for the smallest possible binary. It is great for embedded targets where space is scarce.

In Debug and ReleaseSafe, things like integer overflow or out-of-bounds access stop the program with a clear panic instead of silent corruption.

ReleaseFast removes checks because they cost time. Once code is well tested, you may trade those guards for the last bit of speed.

Many teams ship with ReleaseSafe. It keeps protective checks active in production while still running far faster than Debug builds.

Watch out: code with overflow may panic in Debug but wrap or misbehave in ReleaseFast. Test in the mode you intend to release.

The same source can produce a checked debug build and a lean release build. Only the flag changes, never the code you wrote.
