The Same Header, Every Page

Every page on your site starts with the same logo, search, and menu. Sighted users skim past it in a blink. But not everyone can skim. 👀

Tabbing Is Linear

A keyboard user moves through a page one focusable element at a time with Tab. There is no glancing ahead, only stepping forward.

Count the Cost

Imagine a nav with 20 links. To reach the article, a keyboard user presses Tab 20 times. Now multiply that by every page they visit.

Screen Readers Replay It Too

A screen reader user often hears the whole nav read aloud before the content begins. Same repeated header, every single time.

This Has a Name

WCAG calls this problem repeated blocks of content. The fix is letting people bypass them, which is why the criterion is named Bypass Blocks.

Enter the Skip Link

A skip link is a shortcut at the very top of the page. Activate it and focus jumps straight to the main content.

It Comes First on Purpose

The skip link is usually the first focusable element on the page, so it is the first thing Tab reaches before any nav links.

Who Benefits Most

Skip links help keyboard and screen reader users most, but anyone using switch devices or voice control feels the same relief.

It Is a Success Criterion

Bypass Blocks is WCAG 2.4.1, a Level A requirement. That means it is the baseline, not a nice-to-have extra.

Cheap to Add, Big Payoff

A skip link is just one anchor pointing at your content. Tiny effort, yet it saves real people dozens of keystrokes per visit. ✨

More Than One Way

Skip links are the common fix, but proper landmarks and a clean heading outline also let users bypass repeated content.

Quick Check

Why does repeated content frustrate keyboard users?

Recap

Repeated headers cost keyboard users real effort. A skip link, the fix for WCAG Bypass Blocks, jumps them straight to the content. 🎯
