What Is a Pointer?

A pointer is just a value that holds the memory address of another value. It points at where data lives, not the data itself. 👉

An Address, Not a Copy

Think of a pointer like a house address. The address is small and easy to pass around, even when the house itself is large.

Why Pointers Exist

Pointers let code share or reach heap data without copying it. They are the building block under lists, strings, and other dynamic types.

You Often Avoid Them

In everyday Mojo you rarely touch raw pointers. Higher-level types like List wrap them so you get the benefit without the risk.

When You Need One

You reach for a pointer when writing low-level code: managing a buffer, talking to hardware, or squeezing out maximum performance.

Dereferencing

To use the value a pointer points to, you dereference it. That step follows the address and reads or writes the data there.

Safe Pointer Types

Mojo offers safer pointer types in its standard library that track what they point to, helping you avoid classic memory mistakes.

Pointers Point at the Heap

A pointer usually refers to data on the heap, the flexible region where runtime-sized values live. The pointer itself is tiny.

Sharing Without Copying

Passing a pointer hands over an address instead of duplicating the data. That makes sharing large values cheap and fast.

The Danger to Respect

A pointer can point at memory that is gone. Mojo's ownership rules are designed to catch many such dangling cases for you.

Pointers, Demystified

A pointer is simply an address you can follow. Understand that and the rest of memory work feels far less scary. 💡

Quick Check

Let us pin down what a pointer actually stores.

Recap

A pointer holds an address you can follow to reach data. Mojo's safe types and ownership rules keep them from being scary. 🎯
