Why Pricing Matters Early
Before you build, understand how Firebase bills you — the wrong plan can block a launch or surprise you with a bill. Two plans: Spark (free), Blaze (pay-as-you-go).
The Spark Plan
The Spark plan is free and great for learning: generous fixed quotas, no credit card, and hard limits that simply pause a service when hit.
The Blaze Plan
The Blaze plan is pay-as-you-go: same free quotas, then you pay only beyond them. It is required for Cloud Functions and needs a billing account.
Usage-Based Billing
Most Firebase services bill on metered usage, not a flat fee. For Realtime Database the meters are GB stored, GB downloaded, and live connections.
Auth Pricing
Firebase Auth is free for most sign-in methods, including email and social. The exception is phone auth, which bills per verification SMS sent.
Realtime Database Free Quotas
On Spark, Realtime Database gives fixed storage and monthly download, then throttles. Keep payloads small and avoid pulling subtrees you do not need — download is billed.
Setting a Budget Alert
On Blaze, always set a budget alert in Google Cloud Billing. It emails you at thresholds you pick — it will not cap spend, but it buys reaction time.
Capping Function Costs
For Cloud Functions, set max instances to cap concurrency. That caps invocation cost even when a traffic spike hits.

The console Usage tab shows consumption against quotas per service — check it often to learn what your real traffic costs. Cloud Billing gives line-item detail.
Common Cost Pitfalls
Most surprise bills trace to a few patterns: listeners on huge nodes, unbounded queries, unrate-limited phone auth, and functions that trigger themselves.
When to Upgrade
Move to Blaze when you need Cloud Functions, outgrow Spark quotas, or hit production. For learning and small apps, Spark is usually plenty.
