Errors Are Your Allies
Zig's compiler errors are precise and friendly. Instead of fearing them, learn to read them; they usually point straight at the fix.
The Error Format
A Zig error starts with the file, line, and column, then the message. That location tells you exactly where to look first.
main.zig:3:5: error: unused local variable 'x'A Pointing Caret
Below the message, Zig prints the offending line and a caret underneath the exact spot. Your eyes go right to the problem.
Unused Variables Are Errors
Zig treats an unused local or import as an error, not a warning. This keeps code honest, with no dead bindings lingering around.
Silencing on Purpose
If you truly want to ignore a value, assign it to _, the discard identifier. That tells Zig the unused value was intentional.
_ = x;Type Mismatch Messages
When types clash, Zig names both the expected and the found type. Reading them side by side reveals the conversion you missed.
error: expected type 'u8', found 'i32'Notes Add Context
After an error, Zig may print note lines. These extra hints explain related details, like where a type was first declared.
Fix the First Error First
One mistake often triggers several messages. Fix the first error, recompile, and many later complaints frequently disappear on their own.
Compile-Time, Not Runtime
These messages appear at compile time, before your program ever runs. Catching mistakes early is exactly why Zig is so strict.
Reference Traces
For deeper issues, Zig shows a reference trace of how the compiler reached the faulty code, like a call path back to the cause.
Read Top to Bottom
Always read an error block from the top down. The headline states the problem; the notes and trace below it explain the why.
Quick Check
Zig reports an unused local variable, but you intended to ignore it. What is the idiomatic fix?
Recap
You can now decode Zig errors: read location and caret, fix the first one, use notes for context, and discard with underscore when needed. ✅
