Great ideas hide in everyday life. Mine your own frustrations, tedious tasks, fresh tech trends, and apps you wish worked better. Start by observing.
The Problem-First Approach
Flip the question with a problem-first approach: not “I want to build an app” but “what problem can it solve?” Avoids the classic solution-in-search-of-a-problem trap.
Mapping Problems to Solutions
Once you have a problem, brainstorm every possible solution without filtering. “I forget to water my plants” could be a reminder, an ID app, or a smart sensor.
Initial Idea Filter
Run each idea through a quick filter: is it a real problem for others, is the market big enough, can you build it, and are you genuinely excited?
Checking the Waters
Do light market research: scan the app stores for rivals and reviews, check Google Trends for interest, and see if forums discuss the problem. Gauge demand fast.
Learn from the Competition
Competition means a market exists, so learn from rivals: study their features, pricing, and reviews to find the gap or angle that makes you better.
Testing Interest Early
You do not need a full app to test demand. A fake-door test is a simple landing page; count signups to a waitlist to measure real interest cheaply.
Get Real Feedback
The strongest validation is talking to 5–10 potential users about their problems and how they solve them today. Listen more than you pitch.
