What is Data Pagination?
Imagine you have thousands of items in your app, like a long list of social media posts or products. Displaying all of them at once would be slow and overwhelming!
Data pagination is a technique to break down large datasets into smaller, manageable chunks or "pages." This way, your app only loads and displays a few items at a time.
Why Paginate in Firebase?
Firebase Realtime Database is great for real-time data, but fetching huge amounts of data has downsides:
- Performance: Loading all data at once can make your app slow and unresponsive.
- Bandwidth: It consumes more network data, which can be costly for users on mobile plans.
- Memory: Storing too much data in memory can crash your app, especially on older devices.
Pagination solves these issues by loading data incrementally.
Foundation: Ordering Your Data
Before you can paginate, your data needs a consistent order. Firebase queries require an orderBy clause to sort the results. This is crucial for knowing what comes "next" or "before" a specific item.
Common ordering methods include:

For forward pagination (loading newer items), limitToFirst() is typically used.
Fetching the First Page
To get the initial set of data, combine an orderByChild() with limitToFirst(). Let's say we want the first 3 posts ordered by their timestamp.

Implementing Next Page Logic
When using startAt(value, key), the item with that exact value and key is included in the results. To avoid showing the last item from the previous page again, a common pattern is to fetch N + 1 items and then discard the first one.
