Intro to Atomic Design
Welcome! Today we'll explore Atomic Design, a methodology for crafting design systems. It breaks down interfaces into fundamental building blocks, much like chemistry.
Created by Brad Frost, it helps us create consistent, scalable, and maintainable user interfaces by organizing components in a hierarchical way.
Atoms: Building Blocks
In Atomic Design, atoms are the smallest, fundamental UI elements that can't be broken down further without losing their meaning.
- Think of HTML tags: buttons, inputs, labels, headings.
- They are purely functional and provide basic styles.
- Alone, they might not do much, but they are crucial groundwork.
Atom: Button Example
Here's a simple HTML "atom" – a button. It has a specific style and purpose, but no complex logic on its own.

Molecules are groups of atoms bonded together to form a small, reusable component. They have their own properties and perform a specific function.
- A search form (input atom + button atom).
- A field label with its input.
- The combination creates a new, functional unit.

Organisms are relatively complex components composed of molecules, atoms, and even other organisms. They form distinct sections of an interface.
- A navigation bar (logo, menu links, search form molecule).
- A footer, a sidebar, or a product listing card.
- These are self-contained, portable, and reusable UI sections.
Organism: Header
A typical website header is a great example of an organism, combining multiple atoms and molecules into a functional section.

</header>Templates: Page Structure
Templates are page-level objects that place organisms into a layout. They focus on the page's underlying content structure, not the actual content.
- Think of a wireframe or a blueprint.
- They define the arrangement of components (header, sidebar, main content area).
- Templates are abstract, using placeholder content.
Pages: Final UI
Pages are specific instances of templates with real, representative content applied. This is where you see the final user interface.
- A product page, a blog post, or a contact page.
- They help test the design system's effectiveness and how components look with actual data.
- This is the most concrete stage of Atomic Design.

- Consistency: Ensures a unified look and feel.
- Reusability: Components can be used across many projects.
