From Code to Production

You've written your Clojure code, now what? This lesson covers how to transform your source files into a runnable package and ensure it works correctly.

We'll explore the essential steps involved in compiling, testing, and packaging your Clojure application for various deployment environments.

Clojure Compilation Basics

Clojure code doesn't execute directly on your hardware. Instead, it gets compiled into JVM bytecode, which the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) can understand and run.

  • Ahead-of-Time (AOT) Compilation: Compiles code into .class files before runtime. This is crucial for creating standalone executables.
  • Just-In-Time (JIT) Compilation: The JVM further optimizes and compiles bytecode to native machine code during runtime for performance.

Packaging with UberJARs

For easy deployment, we often package our application into an UberJAR. Think of it as a 'fat JAR' because it's a single Java Archive (JAR) file.

An UberJAR contains your compiled Clojure code, all its third-party dependencies (libraries), and a manifest file that specifies the main entry point. This makes deployment straightforward – you only need to distribute one file.

Main Entry Point

When you run a compiled Clojure application (like an UberJAR), it needs a starting point. This is typically a function named -main in a namespace.

The (:gen-class) directive in the ns form is used to generate a Java class that makes this -main function directly callable from the JVM.

Try running this simple example:

(ns example.main)

(defn -main
  "Our application's entry point."
  [& args]
  (println "Clojure app started!"))

;; This function will be called when
;; the compiled application starts.

Ensuring Quality with Tests

Before deploying any application, you need confidence that it works correctly. This is where testing becomes vital!

Clojure provides a built-in testing framework called clojure.test. It offers tools to define test suites, individual test cases, and assertions to verify your code's behavior.

Basic Test Structure

In clojure.test, you define tests using the deftest macro, and make assertions using macros like is. It's common practice to place your tests in separate files, usually named your_ns_test.clj.

  • deftest: Used to define a new test function.
  • is: The primary assertion macro; it checks if an expression evaluates to a logical true value.

Making Assertions

The is macro is fundamental for writing tests. It evaluates an expression; if the result is logically false, the test fails. You can also provide an optional message.

While deftest structures tests, you can see is in action directly. Try changing (add 1 2) to 4 in the code below and run it to see a failure!

(ns example.assertions
  (:require [clojure.test :refer [is]]))

(defn add [a b]
  (+ a b))

;; These simulate test assertions
(is (= 3 (add 1 2))) ; This should pass
(is (= 5 (add 2 2))) ; This should fail
(is (= 0 (add -1 1))) ; This should pass

;; In a real test, these would be inside a deftest.

Preparing for Deployment

Once your UberJAR is built and thoroughly tested, you're almost ready to deploy! Keep these crucial points in mind:

  • Configuration: Use environment variables or external configuration files (e.g., EDN) to manage settings that differ between development, staging, and production environments.
  • Logging: Ensure your application logs useful information. This is vital for monitoring its health, debugging issues, and understanding its behavior in production.
  • Runtime: The target environment needs a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installed to execute your UberJAR.

Build & Test Check

You've learned about compiling Clojure code, creating UberJARs, and basic testing. Let's check your understanding of these crucial concepts.

Recap: Build, Test, Deploy

In this lesson, we demystified the process of moving your Clojure application from raw code to a production-ready artifact.

  • We covered AOT compilation to JVM bytecode.
  • Learned about UberJARs for packaging your app and its dependencies into a single file.
  • Explored clojure.test for writing and running effective tests.
  • Discussed key deployment considerations like configuration and logging.

You now have a solid foundation for building, testing, and deploying your Clojure projects!
