The Missing Piece

A plain Arduino Uno has no way to reach the internet. For real IoT, you need a board with built-in WiFi, and that is where the ESP family shines. 📡

Meet the ESP8266

The ESP8266 is a tiny, cheap chip with WiFi baked right in. It made low-cost internet projects possible for hobbyists everywhere.

Meet the ESP32

The ESP32 is its bigger sibling: faster, dual-core, and it adds Bluetooth alongside WiFi. It is the go-to board for serious IoT today.

Same Language You Know

Here is the best part: both boards run the same Arduino code style you have already learned. setup() and loop() work exactly as before.

void setup() {
  Serial.begin(115200);
}
void loop() {
}

More Power Under the Hood

An ESP32 runs at up to 240 MHz with far more memory than an Uno. That headroom lets it juggle WiFi and your sensors at once.

Watch the Voltage

One key difference: ESP pins run on 3.3V, not 5V. Feeding them 5V can fry the chip, so check every sensor's voltage first.

Faster Serial Speed

ESP boards usually open Serial at 115200 baud, not 9600. It keeps up with the chatty WiFi boot messages they print at startup.

Serial.begin(115200);

Lots of Pins, Some Special

The ESP32 offers many GPIO pins, but a few are reserved or input-only. You learn which ones are safe as you build.

The WiFi Library

To go online you include the built-in WiFi library. One header line unlocks connecting, scanning, and serving web pages.

#include <WiFi.h>

Cheap Enough to Deploy

These boards cost just a few dollars, so you can scatter many around a home or farm. Low price is a huge reason the ESP dominates IoT.

Which One to Pick

Need only WiFi on a tight budget? The ESP8266 is fine. Want Bluetooth, more pins, and speed? Reach for the ESP32.

Quick Check

You want a board for IoT that also speaks Bluetooth. Which fits best?

Recap

You met the WiFi-ready ESP boards, saw they run familiar Arduino code on 3.3V, and learned the ESP32 adds Bluetooth and power. 🎉
