What a Schematic Is

A schematic is a map of a circuit using symbols instead of pictures. It shows what connects to what, not where parts physically sit. 🗺️

Why Not Just a Photo

Photos hide wires behind parts. A schematic is clean and unambiguous, so anyone can rebuild your circuit from it exactly.

Lines Are Wires

Every line in a schematic is a wire, a perfect connection. Follow the lines to see exactly which parts are joined.

Crossing vs Connecting

Two crossing lines do not touch unless there is a dot at the junction. The dot means a real connection; no dot means they just pass over.

The Resistor Symbol

A resistor appears as a zigzag, or a plain rectangle in newer diagrams. Its ohm value is written right beside it.

The LED Symbol

An LED is a triangle pointing to a bar, with two little arrows for light. The bar side is the negative leg, the cathode.

Power and Ground Symbols

Power is shown as a labeled pin like 5V or VCC. Ground is the downward triangle or stacked lines at the bottom.

Ground Symbols Are Linked

A schematic may show several ground symbols. They all represent the same node, even with no visible wire drawn between them.

Read Power to Ground

Trace a schematic by following current from the power source, through each part, and back to ground. That path is your circuit.

A Tiny LED Example

Picture pin 13, then a resistor, then an LED, then ground. That short chain is a complete blink circuit on paper. 💡

From Schematic to Breadboard

To build it, place each part so its connected legs land in the same row. The schematic tells you which legs those are.

Quick Check

One detail decides whether two wires are joined.

Recap

You can now read a schematic: lines are wires, dots mark real junctions, symbols name the parts, and tracing power to ground reveals the whole circuit. 🎉
