Your Self-Service Billing Hub

The Stripe Customer Portal is a pre-built, hosted page that allows your customers to manage their billing information and subscriptions directly.

Think of it as a secure, personalized dashboard for their payment relationship with your business. It saves you development time!

Benefits of Self-Service

Empowering customers with self-service has several advantages:

  • Reduced Support Load: Customers can update details without contacting you.
  • Improved Customer Experience: Instant access to billing info 24/7.
  • Enhanced Security: Stripe handles sensitive data securely.
  • Faster Development: Less code for you to write and maintain.

The Customer Portal Flow

Here's a simple overview of how a user accesses the portal:

  1. Your user clicks a link in your app (e.g., "Manage Billing").
  2. Your backend server makes an API call to Stripe to create a unique portal session.
  3. Stripe returns a secure URL for that session.
  4. Your server redirects the user's browser to this Stripe-hosted URL.

The user then interacts directly with Stripe's secure portal.

Generating a Portal Link

To give your customer access, your backend needs to create a billing_portal.Session object with Stripe.

You'll need two key pieces of information:

  • Customer ID: The ID of the customer in Stripe (e.g., cus_xyz).
  • Return URL: Where to send the customer after they're done in the portal.

This ensures the portal is personalized and secure.

Code: Generate Portal Session

Here's a simplified Java example of how your server might create a Customer Portal session. Remember to replace placeholders!

Redirecting to the Portal

Once your backend successfully creates the billing_portal.Session, it receives an object containing a url property.

Your server should then redirect the user's browser to this url. For example, in a web application, you might send an HTTP 303 Redirect response.

Customer Actions in the Portal

Inside the Customer Portal, users can perform various actions, based on what you've enabled:

  • Update payment methods (cards, bank accounts)
  • View and download past invoices
  • Change subscription plans (upgrade/downgrade)
  • Cancel their subscription
  • Update billing information (address, email)

Tailoring the Portal Look

Stripe allows you to customize the Customer Portal to match your brand:

  • Branding: Set your logo, accent color, and icon.
  • Features: Enable or disable specific actions like canceling subscriptions or updating payment methods.
  • Links: Add custom links to your privacy policy or terms of service.

This ensures a consistent user experience.

Managing Portal Configuration

You can configure the Customer Portal's behavior and appearance in two main ways:

  • Stripe Dashboard: Navigate to "Settings" > "Customer portal" to set global preferences.
  • API: Use the billing_portal.configurations API to create and manage multiple portal configurations, useful for different product lines or regions.

This gives you fine-grained control.
