GitOps: Code as Truth

GitOps is an operational framework that extends DevOps best practices to infrastructure and application automation. It uses Git as the single source of truth for your declarative infrastructure and applications.

Think of it as "operating infrastructure with Git requests." This approach ensures your system's actual state matches the desired state defined in your Git repository.

Declarative Configuration

A core principle of GitOps is declarative configuration. This means you describe what you want your infrastructure and applications to look like, rather than how to achieve it.

  • Your desired state is written in configuration files (like YAML for Kubernetes).
  • These files are stored in a Git repository.
  • Git becomes the single source of truth for your system's state.

Version Control & Rollbacks

  • Version control: Every change to your infrastructure is tracked.

Automated Synchronization

How does your cluster know what's in Git? GitOps uses an automation agent (or operator) running inside your Kubernetes cluster.

This agent continuously monitors your Git repository for changes to the desired state. When it detects a difference, it automatically applies those changes to your cluster, ensuring synchronization.

Continuous Reconciliation

The automation agent doesn't just apply changes once. It performs continuous reconciliation.

  • It constantly compares the actual state of your cluster with the desired state defined in Git.
  • If any drift occurs (e.g., someone manually changes a resource, or a pod crashes), the agent detects it.
  • It then automatically corrects the cluster's state to match what's in Git, ensuring consistency and self-healing.

GitOps Tools: Argo CD

Several open-source tools implement the GitOps pattern. Argo CD is a popular continuous delivery tool specifically designed for Kubernetes.

It works by continuously monitoring specified Git repositories and automatically synchronizing the desired state with the actual state of applications in a Kubernetes cluster, providing a powerful UI for visualization.

GitOps Tools: Flux CD

Another leading GitOps tool is Flux CD. Like Argo CD, Flux automates the deployment of applications to Kubernetes clusters directly from Git.

Flux ensures that the state of a cluster matches the configuration in a Git repository. It can also manage Helm releases and Kustomize overlays, offering flexibility in how you define your desired state.

Defining a K8s Deployment

Imagine this YAML file lives in your Git repository. An Argo CD or Flux agent would watch this file. When committed, the agent applies it to your cluster, creating or updating the deployment.
