Welcome to the final lesson on Microservices! We've built and containerized our Clojure services. Now, let's deploy them to the cloud.

Cloud platforms offer scalable, reliable, and cost-effective ways to host your applications, freeing you from managing physical servers.

Why Deploy to Cloud?

Deploying to the cloud brings many benefits for microservices:

  • Scalability: Easily handle varying traffic by scaling resources up or down.
  • Reliability: Built-in redundancy and fault tolerance.
  • Cost-Efficiency: Pay only for what you use, reducing upfront infrastructure costs.
  • Global Reach: Deploy services closer to users worldwide.

Cloud Service Models

Cloud providers offer different service models:

  • IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service): You manage OS, runtime, data. E.g., Virtual Machines (EC2, Compute Engine).
  • PaaS (Platform as a Service): Provider manages OS, runtime. You deploy code. E.g., Heroku, AWS Elastic Beanstalk, Google App Engine.
  • FaaS (Function as a Service): Serverless execution for small code snippets. E.g., AWS Lambda, Google Cloud Functions.

These are crucial for choosing the right deployment strategy for your Clojure microservices.

AWS: Amazon Web Services

AWS is a leading cloud provider. For Clojure microservices, common services include:

  • Amazon EC2: Virtual servers for IaaS.
  • Amazon ECS / EKS: Container orchestration for Dockerized apps (ECS for simple, EKS for Kubernetes).
  • AWS Lambda: Serverless functions for FaaS.

Cloud Run is particularly well-suited for deploying stateless Clojure microservices quickly.

Azure: Microsoft Azure

Azure provides a comprehensive suite of cloud services:

  • Azure Virtual Machines: IaaS virtual machines.
  • Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS): Managed Kubernetes service.
  • Azure Container Apps: Serverless platform for microservices and containers.
  • Azure Functions: Serverless functions (FaaS).

Azure Container Apps offer a great balance for microservices, providing container hosting without managing Kubernetes directly.

Clojure & Docker for Cloud

In the previous lesson, we containerized our Clojure app with Docker. This is the standard way to deploy microservices to cloud platforms.

Cloud platforms (like AWS ECS, GCP Cloud Run, Azure Container Apps) can pull your Docker image from a container registry (e.g., Docker Hub, AWS ECR, GCP Container Registry) and run it.

Here's a simple core.clj that can be packaged into a Docker image:

Managing Configuration & Secrets

Microservices often need configuration (e.g., database URLs, API keys). In the cloud, it's best to use environment variables and dedicated secret management services.

  • Environment Variables: Pass non-sensitive config via environment variables set during deployment.
  • Secret Managers: Services like AWS Secrets Manager, GCP Secret Manager, or Azure Key Vault securely store sensitive data (passwords, API keys) and allow your application to retrieve them at runtime.

Never hardcode secrets in your code or Docker images!

CI/CD for Cloud Deployment

Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines automate the process of building, testing, and deploying your Clojure microservices.

Tools like GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, or AWS CodePipeline can:

  • Trigger builds on code commits.
  • Run tests.
  • Build Docker images.
  • Push images to a container registry.
  • Deploy updated services to your chosen cloud platform.
