Why Turn One On
You cannot judge an experience you never hear. Running a screen reader yourself is the fastest way to feel what blind users feel on your page.
Three Big Names
You will meet three tools: NVDA on Windows, VoiceOver on Apple devices, and TalkBack on Android. Each turns your markup into speech.
NVDA Is Free
NVDA is a free, open-source Windows screen reader. You download it from NV Access, install it, and it starts reading right away. 🎧
Starting NVDA
Once installed, you launch NVDA with the shortcut Control plus Alt plus N. It begins announcing whatever has focus on screen.
VoiceOver on Mac
VoiceOver ships built into every Mac. You toggle it instantly with Command plus F5, no download or install needed.
VoiceOver on iPhone
On iPhone and iPad, VoiceOver lives in Settings under Accessibility. Tip Siri or triple-click the side button to flip it on fast.
TalkBack on Android
Android's built-in reader is TalkBack. You enable it under Settings, Accessibility, then test how real Android users hear your page.
Pick the Pairing
Screen readers pair best with certain browsers: NVDA with Firefox or Chrome, and VoiceOver with Safari. Test the combos your users actually run.
The Speech Toggle
Sighted testing is easier with the screen off. NVDA lets you mute the display or speed up speech once your ears adjust to the voice.
Test on Real Pages
Open your own site, not a demo. A live screen reader reveals missing labels and silent buttons that your eyes simply skip over.
Slow Down at First
New voices feel fast and robotic. Drop the speech rate while you learn, then raise it as your comfort with the reader grows.
