One of HTTP/2's biggest features is multiplexing. This allows multiple requests and responses to be sent and received concurrently over a single TCP connection.

Smaller Headers with HPACK

HTTP/2 introduces HPACK compression for request and response headers. Instead of sending full, redundant headers with every request, HPACK:

  • Compresses header fields.
  • Uses a shared indexing table for previously sent headers.

This drastically reduces overhead, making transfers faster, especially for many small requests.

Proactive Content: Server Push

Another powerful feature is Server Push. With HTTP/1.1, clients request an HTML page, then parse it, and then request associated CSS, JavaScript, and images.

Server Push allows the server to send these predicted resources to the client before the client even asks for them, reducing latency and speeding up page load times.
