Stopping a Request Early

Sometimes a view should stop right away, like when an item is missing. Flask gives you abort to bail out with the correct HTTP error.

Import abort

You bring it in straight from Flask. Then a single call ends the request and skips the rest of your view code.

from flask import abort

Calling abort

Pass a status code and Flask raises an exception for you. This abort(404) means the thing you asked for was not found.

abort(404)

Guarding a Lookup

The classic use is after a database lookup. If the row is missing, you abort instead of returning broken data.

user = find(id)
if user is None:
    abort(404)

404 Not Found

The most common one you will reach for is 404. It tells the client the requested resource simply does not exist here.

400 Bad Request

When the client sends something malformed, use 400. It signals the input was wrong, not the server.

abort(400)

403 Forbidden

Use 403 when a user is known but not allowed. They are authenticated, yet this action is off limits to them.

abort(403)

Adding a Message

You can attach a short note to explain what went wrong. The description shows up in the default error page.

abort(404, description="Post not found")

abort Raises, It Does Not Return

Remember that abort raises an exception. Code written after it never runs, so you do not need an else branch.

The 4xx vs 5xx Split

Codes in the 4xx range blame the client, while 5xx mean the server failed. Picking the right family helps clients react well.

Why Correct Codes Matter

API clients and browsers branch on the status code, not your words. A precise code lets them retry, redirect, or warn correctly.

Quick Check

Pick the status code that fits a missing resource.

Recap

You learned to stop a request with abort, send the right code like 404, 400, or 403, and add a helpful description. Nice work!
