What is Cloud Native?
Cloud native is about how you build software to fully exploit the cloud, not just where it runs. The payoff: scalable, resilient, manageable systems.
Why Go Cloud Native?
Going cloud native lets teams ship faster, scale with demand, recover from failures automatically, and use cloud resources efficiently.
Containers: App's Package
At the core sits containerization: a lightweight package bundling your code, runtime, libraries, and settings so the app runs the same anywhere.
Benefits of Containers
Containers give you portability across environments, isolation so apps do not clash, and far less overhead than full virtual machines.
Immutability: Never Change
Immutability means a deployed container or server is never modified in place. Need a change? Build a fresh one and replace the old entirely.
Immutability in Practice
So you never patch a live container. To fix a bug, you build a new image with the fix and swap it in. Consistent deploys, simple rollbacks.
Orchestration: The Conductor
With many containers across many servers, you need orchestration to automate deploying, scaling, and managing them. Kubernetes is the classic example.
Orchestration's Superpowers
Orchestration gives you auto-scaling for traffic spikes, self-healing that replaces dead containers, and load balancing across the rest.
Principles Working Together
These principles compound: containers package the app, immutability keeps deploys predictable, and orchestration runs it all at scale.
Quick Check: Cloud Native
Which of the following best describes the principle of immutability in cloud-native development?
Cloud Native Recap
Recap: cloud native rests on containers for packaging, immutability for consistency, and orchestration for scale. The base for resilient modern software.
