Welcome to HTTP!

HTTP — Hypertext Transfer Protocol — is the web’s language. It’s the rules your code and scrapers use to talk to web servers and fetch data.

Client-Server Chat

HTTP follows a client-server model: your browser (client) asks for pages, the website’s machine (server) stores and sends them back.

Making an HTTP Request

Type a URL and hit Enter, and your browser fires an HTTP request — a message asking the server for a specific resource like a page or image.

Anatomy of a Request

An HTTP request has structure: a method (the action), a URL, headers (extra context like your browser), and an optional body for data.

GET: Fetching Data

GET is the scraper’s workhorse — it retrieves data. Visiting a page sends a GET request for that page’s HTML.

POST: Sending Data

POST sends data to the server — think logging in, submitting a comment, or uploading a file. Your browser posts that data up.

Demo: A Conceptual Request

Here’s the shape of a basic GET request, printed for illustration. We’re just showing the structure, not actually sending it over the network.

def main():
  # This is what an HTTP GET request looks like conceptually:
  method = "GET"
  path = "/index.html"
  http_version = "HTTP/1.1"
  host = "www.example.com"
  user_agent = "CoddyKit-Scraper/1.0"

  print(f"{method} {path} {http_version}")
  print(f"Host: {host}")
  print(f"User-Agent: {user_agent}")
  print("Connection: close")
  print("") # Blank line separates headers from body

if __name__ == "__main__":
  main()

The Server's Response

The server processes your request and sends back a response — the data you asked for (like HTML) plus info on whether it succeeded.

Response Status Codes

Every response carries a status code: 200 OK, 404 Not Found, 301 Moved, 500 Server Error. It tells you the outcome at a glance.

Why Emulate Browsers?

Scrapers often emulate a browser — sending requests that look like a real one. Correct methods and headers help you avoid getting blocked.

Quick Check: HTTP Flow

When you type a URL into your browser, what is the FIRST thing your browser typically sends to the web server?

Recap: HTTP Fundamentals

Solid foundation! You’ve got the client-server model, HTTP requests (GET, POST) and responses, status codes, and why scrapers emulate browsers.
