The Sleepy Sensor Loop

A long-lived sensor node follows one rhythm: sleep, wake briefly, sample, send, then sleep again. Most of its life is spent resting. 🌙

Awake Time Is Costly

Every second awake burns the most current. The golden rule is to keep the awake window as short as humanly possible, then sleep.

Connect Fast, Then Drop

WiFi is the heaviest cost, so connect only when you must, send your data quickly, and disconnect before going back to sleep.

Pick a Sensible Interval

How often you wake sets the battery life. A node reporting every interval of fifteen minutes lasts far longer than one reporting each second.

Setup Does the Whole Job

Because deep sleep restarts the chip, all your work lives in setup. The loop stays empty; the cycle is one full boot each time.

void setup(){ /* sample, send, sleep */ }
void loop(){}

Read the Sensor First

Right after boot, power up and read your sensor. Get the value early so the rest of the awake time is just sending and sleeping.

float temp = readSensor();

Send the Reading

Publish the value over WiFi using MQTT or a quick HTTP POST. Lightweight messages keep the radio on for the shortest time.

client.publish("home/temp", String(temp).c_str());

Then Go Back to Sleep

Once the data is sent, arm the timer and call deep sleep. The node powers down to microamps until the next scheduled wakeup.

esp_sleep_enable_timer_wakeup(900*1000000);
esp_deep_sleep_start();

Cut Idle Hardware Drains

Choose a board with a low-leak regulator and remove the always-on power LED. These fixes shave precious microamps during every nap.

Send Battery Voltage Too

Report the battery voltage with each reading. That extra value warns you before the cell dies, so you can swap it in time.

Estimate the Lifespan

Average the brief awake current with the long sleep current, then divide capacity by that average. Now you can predict months of runtime.

Quick Check

Confirm the core idea behind a battery node.

Recap: Sleep, Sample, Send

A battery node does its work in setup: read, send fast, then deep sleep. Pick a sensible interval and trim idle drains to last for months. 🔋
