Edge computing moves computation and data storage close to where your users actually are, instead of one distant data center. Processing happens at the edge of the network.

The classic cloud is powerful, but far-flung users pay for it in latency, bandwidth costs, and single points of failure. Edge exists to soften all three.

An edge node is a mini data center near the user — a server in a cell tower, a smart device, a global network like Cloudflare. Data travels less to reach it.

The headline win is reduced latency. Data travels less, so pages load quicker and real-time interactions feel snappy — even for users far from any cloud region.

Processing at the edge cuts what you ship back to the cloud. An IoT device can filter raw sensor noise locally and send only the insights — saving bandwidth and cost.

Spreading compute across many edge locations makes apps resilient. If one node drops, others cover it — and services keep running even when the cloud link flickers.

Edge is already everywhere: CDNs caching content, IoT devices, autonomous vehicles deciding in real time, and low-latency gaming and AR/VR.

Edge doesn't replace the cloud — it complements it. The cloud still owns heavy storage and analytics; edge handles the immediate, time-sensitive work near users.
