Why Asynchronous Integration

Enterprise systems decouple producers from consumers using message queues. The iOS client sends a message and continues, rather than blocking on a response.

  • Survives temporary backend downtime
  • Smooths traffic spikes
  • Enables event-driven workflows

Queues vs Request/Response

A direct request/response call fails if the server is down. A queued message waits until a worker processes it. The trade-off is eventual consistency instead of immediate results.

Building a Message Envelope

Wrap each outgoing event in an envelope with a type, payload, and idempotency key.

NSDictionary *envelope = @{
    @"type": @"order.created",
    @"idempotencyKey": [[NSUUID UUID] UUIDString],
    @"payload": @{ @"orderId": @42, @"total": @99.50 }
};

Serializing the Envelope

Serialize to JSON before sending to the broker over HTTP or a socket.

NSError *err = nil;
NSData *data = [NSJSONSerialization dataWithJSONObject:envelope
                                              options:0
                                                error:&err];
if (err) { NSLog(@"serialize failed: %@", err); }

Idempotency Matters

Networks retry. Without an idempotency key, a retried 'order.created' could create two orders. The backend dedupes on the key so retries are safe.

Local Outbox Pattern

Persist unsent messages in a local outbox first, then flush them. If the app crashes mid-send, the message is not lost.

@interface Outbox : NSObject
- (void)enqueue:(NSDictionary *)envelope;
- (NSArray *)pendingMessages;
- (void)markSent:(NSString *)idempotencyKey;
@end

Flushing the Outbox

On connectivity, drain the outbox in order. Mark each message sent only after the broker acknowledges it.

for (NSDictionary *msg in [self.outbox pendingMessages]) {
    [self.broker send:msg completion:^(BOOL ok) {
        if (ok) [self.outbox markSent:msg[@"idempotencyKey"]];
    }];
}

Consuming Inbound Events

For inbound events (push, polling, or a subscription), apply the same dedupe logic so replayed events do not double-apply state changes.

Ordering Guarantees

Most queues guarantee per-partition ordering, not global ordering. Design messages so out-of-order delivery is tolerable, using version numbers when order matters.

Observability

Log every enqueue, send, and ack with the idempotency key. In enterprise audits you must prove a message was sent and processed exactly once.

Failure and Backoff

On repeated failure, apply exponential backoff and a dead-letter strategy so a poison message cannot block the whole outbox.

Quick Check

Test your async integration knowledge.

Recap

You learned message envelopes, idempotency, the local outbox pattern, ordering caveats, and failure handling for asynchronous enterprise integration in Objective-C.
