Every Zap starts with a Trigger. This is the event that kicks off your automation. First, you need to choose the application where this event will happen. Think about what app "starts" your process.

After selecting your trigger app, you define the specific Trigger Event. This tells Zapier exactly what to look for.

• New Email: Triggers when a new email arrives.

Choose the event that matches what you want to start your automation.

To allow Zapier to "listen" for events in your app, you need to connect your account. This is a one-time authorization step.

• Zapier will ask for permission to access your account (e.g., Google, Slack).
• You'll usually be redirected to the app's login page to grant access.
• This securely links your app to Zapier.

Once your account is connected, Zapier will ask you to test the trigger. This is crucial!

It tries to pull in recent data from your app based on your trigger event. This helps confirm:

• Your connection works.
• Zapier can "see" the data it needs.
• You have sample data to use in later steps.

Next, you define the Action. This is what Zapier will do once the trigger event occurs. Just like the trigger, you start by choosing the application where this action will take place.

For instance, if you want to send a message, you might pick Slack or Microsoft Teams.

After selecting your action app, you define the specific Action Event. This tells Zapier exactly what task to perform.

• Send Channel Message: Posts a message to a chat.
• Create Spreadsheet Row: Adds a new line of data.
• Create Task: Generates a new task in a project tool.

Pick the action that completes your desired automation.

Similar to the trigger, you'll connect your action app account. Then comes data mapping – this is where you tell Zapier which pieces of information from your trigger should go into which fields of your action.

For example, you might map the "Sender Email" from your trigger to the "Email Address" field in your action.

Finally, you'll test your action. Zapier will attempt to perform the action using the sample data it pulled from your trigger. Review the results to ensure everything works as expected.

Once tested, give your Zap a descriptive name and turn it "On" to activate your automation!
