Cold vs Warm Launch

A cold launch starts the process from scratch; a warm launch resumes a suspended process. Cold launches are slowest and most visible to users.

The Launch Budget

Apple recommends launching in under 400ms of pre-main plus main work where possible. Treat launch time as a budget you must not exceed.

Measuring Pre-main Time

Use the environment variable to log dynamic linker and runtime initialization time before main() runs.

// Set in scheme environment variables
DYLD_PRINT_STATISTICS=1
// Console prints dylib loading, rebase, and ObjC setup timings

Reducing Dynamic Libraries

Each dynamic framework adds load time. Merging small frameworks or using static linking reduces pre-main cost in large legacy apps.

Trimming +load Methods

Every +load runs at launch before main(). Prefer +initialize, which runs lazily on first use.

@implementation Analytics
// Avoid heavy work here
+ (void)load { }
// Prefer lazy setup
+ (void)initialize {
    if (self == [Analytics class]) { /* setup */ }
}
@end

Defer Non-Critical Work

Move analytics, prefetch, and feature flags off the critical launch path. Schedule them after the first frame is drawn.

dispatch_after(dispatch_time(DISPATCH_TIME_NOW,
    (int64_t)(0.5 * NSEC_PER_SEC)), dispatch_get_main_queue(), ^{
    [self startBackgroundServices];
});

Profiling with Time Profiler

Use the Instruments Time Profiler to record a cold launch. Sort by self-weight to find the methods consuming the most CPU during startup.

Lazy UI Construction

Avoid building the entire view hierarchy at launch. Construct off-screen view controllers only when navigated to.

Signposts for Custom Phases

Add OS signposts around your own launch phases so they appear on the Instruments timeline.

os_log_t log = os_log_create("com.app.launch", "phases");
os_signpost_id_t sid = os_signpost_id_generate(log);
os_signpost_interval_begin(log, sid, "loadConfig");
// ... work ...
os_signpost_interval_end(log, sid, "loadConfig");

Measure, Change, Re-measure

Optimize one thing at a time and re-profile. Without a before/after measurement you cannot prove an improvement and may regress silently.

Guard Against Regression

Add a CI check or manual gate that flags launch-time increases. Legacy apps drift slow again unless launch cost is watched.

Quick Check

Test your launch-optimization knowledge.

Recap

You learned cold vs warm launch, measuring pre-main time, trimming +load methods, deferring non-critical work, signposts, and guarding against launch regressions.
