Your Default Choice
When you are not sure which allocator to use, reach for the GeneralPurposeAllocator. It is safe, flexible, and great while you develop. 🛡️
Create One
The GeneralPurposeAllocator is a generic type you instantiate. You create an instance and then ask it for the actual allocator interface.
var gpa = std.heap.GeneralPurposeAllocator(.{}){};Get the Allocator
Call allocator() on your instance to get a std.mem.Allocator you can pass around. That interface is what functions actually use.
const allocator = gpa.allocator();Clean Up at the End
When you are done, call deinit() on the instance. This is where the allocator reports any problems it found while running.
defer _ = gpa.deinit();It Catches Leaks
The biggest win: it detects leaks. If you allocated memory and never freed it, deinit returns a leak status so the bug cannot hide.
It Catches Double Free
Freeing the same memory twice is a classic bug. The GeneralPurposeAllocator notices a double free and reports it instead of corrupting memory.
It Catches Use After Free
Touching memory after you freed it is dangerous. In safe builds this allocator can flag use-after-free, turning silent crashes into clear errors.
Check the Leak Status
The value deinit returns is an enum. Compare it to .leak to react when memory was not released, for example in your tests.
if (gpa.deinit() == .leak) @panic("memory leaked");Configured at Comptime
The .{} you pass is a config struct read at compile time. You can tune safety checks, but the defaults are sensible for everyday work.
Safety Costs Speed
All this checking adds overhead. The GeneralPurposeAllocator is meant for Debug and ReleaseSafe builds, not for hot, performance-critical paths.
A Typical Setup
The pattern is always the same: create the instance, defer deinit, then grab the allocator and use it everywhere your program needs memory.
var gpa = std.heap.GeneralPurposeAllocator(.{}){};
defer _ = gpa.deinit();
const a = gpa.allocator();Quick Check
Think about what makes this allocator special during development.
Recap
You met the GeneralPurposeAllocator: create it, defer deinit, take its allocator, and let it catch leaks and double frees as you build. 🎯
