Numbers Need Context
A speedup number means little alone. Reading it honestly means knowing what was measured and where the gain truly came from. 🔍
What Is a Speedup?
A speedup is the old time divided by the new time. If Python took 4 seconds and Mojo took 1, that is a 4x speedup.
var speedup = py_time / mojo_timeBeware Tiny Inputs
On a tiny task, startup noise dominates and the ratio swings wildly. A huge speedup on trivial work usually proves nothing.
Compare Like with Like
If your Mojo version skips work the Python one does, the gap is fake. Honest numbers come from truly equivalent code.
Watch the Variance
Look at how much times vary between runs. If results bounce around a lot, your single average may be hiding real instability.
Median Beats One Run
Report the median or average of many runs, not your best lucky run. Cherry-picking the fastest time inflates the story.
Know Your Baseline
Pure CPython is slow, but NumPy is already fast C. Compare against a fair baseline, or your speedup may shrink a lot.
Was It the Algorithm?
A better algorithm can beat any language. Make sure the gain is from Mojo and not from secretly switching to smarter logic.
State the Conditions
Always note the CPU, input size, and run count. A speedup without those conditions cannot be trusted or reproduced by others.
Avoid Hype Words
Say 8x on this task, this machine, not blazing fast everywhere. Honest claims are specific and stay close to the data.
Reproducibility Is Trust
If someone can rerun your test and see similar times, your result earns trust. Reproducibility is the real proof of a benchmark.
Quick Check
Think about reading a speedup without hype.
Recap
Read speedups honestly: pick a fair baseline, average many runs, state the conditions, and skip the hype. Reproducible numbers earn real trust. 🎯
