What Is a Pointer?
A pointer is just a value that holds the memory address of another value. It points at where data lives, not the data itself. 👉
An Address, Not a Copy
Think of a pointer like a house address. The address is small and easy to pass around, even when the house itself is large.
Why Pointers Exist
Pointers let code share or reach heap data without copying it. They are the building block under lists, strings, and other dynamic types.
You Often Avoid Them
In everyday Mojo you rarely touch raw pointers. Higher-level types like List wrap them so you get the benefit without the risk.
When You Need One
You reach for a pointer when writing low-level code: managing a buffer, talking to hardware, or squeezing out maximum performance.
Dereferencing
To use the value a pointer points to, you dereference it. That step follows the address and reads or writes the data there.
Safe Pointer Types
