What Is a Bottleneck?
A bottleneck is the one slow spot that holds back the whole program. Fixing it speeds everything; fixing anything else barely helps.
Profiling Beats Guessing
A profiler watches your program run and reports where the time truly goes. It replaces gut feeling with hard evidence.
Find the Hot Path
The hot path is the code that runs most often or longest. It usually lives inside a tight inner loop doing heavy work.
for i in range(n):
for j in range(n):
total += data[i] * data[j]The 80/20 Rule
Often a small slice of code, around twenty percent, eats most of the time. Profiling helps you find that hot slice fast.
Coarse Timing First
Start broad. Time whole sections of your program to see which one dominates before you zoom into individual functions.
var t = now()
load_data()
print("load:", now() - t)Then Narrow Down
Once a slow section is found, add timers inside it to pinpoint the exact function or loop responsible for the cost.
Beware False Suspects
Code that looks complex is not always slow. Trust the data, not appearance, or you will optimize something that never mattered.
Count How Often It Runs
A fast function called a million times can outweigh a slow one called once. Always consider frequency, not just per-call time.
Watch Memory Pressure
Sometimes the bottleneck is not compute but memory: cache misses and copies. Slow data movement can dominate the timing.
Isolate the Suspect
Pull the suspect code into a tiny benchmark on its own. Measuring it in isolation confirms whether it truly drives the slowdown.
Confirm Before You Fix
Reproduce the slow result twice so you know it is real. A confirmed bottleneck is worth optimizing; a fluke is not.
Quick Check
Think about where your effort pays off.
Recap
You learned to profile, find the hot path, weigh frequency and memory, isolate the suspect, and confirm it before spending any effort. 🔍
