What is OWASP Top 10?

Welcome! Today we'll explore the OWASP Top 10, a crucial guide for web security.

OWASP stands for the Open Web Application Security Project. It's a non-profit foundation focused on improving software security.

The OWASP Top 10 is a standard awareness document for developers and security professionals. It lists the most critical web application security risks.

A03:2021 Injection

Injection is when untrusted data is sent to an interpreter as part of a command or query. This tricks the interpreter into executing unintended commands.

Security Misconfiguration is often a result of insecure default configurations, incomplete configurations, or leaving unnecessary features enabled.

Examples include:

  • Default accounts with weak passwords
  • Unpatched flaws in servers or frameworks
  • Exposed cloud storage buckets
  • Leaving error messages that reveal sensitive system info

Node.js developers must secure their environment, server settings, and dependencies.

A06:2021 Vulnerable Components

Vulnerable and Outdated Components refers to using libraries, frameworks, or other software modules with known security vulnerabilities.

Always keep your dependencies up-to-date and regularly scan for known vulnerabilities.

Software and Data Integrity Failures happen when code or data integrity is compromised, often due to relying on untrusted sources.

This includes insecure deserialization (reconstructing data from untrusted sources) or not verifying the integrity of software updates or critical data.

In Node.js, ensure any deserialized data is trusted and that package sources are secure.

A10:2021 SSRF

Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) occurs when a web application fetches a remote resource without validating the user-supplied URL.

An attacker can trick the application into sending requests to an unintended destination. This could be internal systems, other external services, or even the localhost.

In Node.js, if your server fetches content from URLs provided by users, careful validation is key to prevent SSRF.
