Focus Follows a Path

Press Tab and focus walks a fixed route through the page. That route is the tab order, and getting it right keeps users oriented. 🧭

It Follows the DOM

By default tab order matches your source order, the top-to-bottom sequence of elements in the HTML, not what you see on screen.

Read Order Should Match

Aim for focus to move in the same order people read the page. Header first, then main content, then footer feels natural.

CSS Can Lie

Layout tools like flexbox order move boxes visually but leave the DOM untouched. Focus still follows source, so the two can disagree.

.cards { display: flex; }
.featured { order: -1; }

The Reorder Trap

When CSS reorders items, a keyboard user can jump backward and forward unexpectedly. The fix is to align your HTML order with the visual one.

Never Use Positive tabindex

A positive tabindex like 3 forces a control to the front of the order. It almost always creates a confusing, hard-to-maintain mess.

<button tabindex="3">Avoid this</button>

Source Order Is the Real Fix

Instead of patching with tabindex, just put elements in the right order in the markup. Clean source order needs no special attributes.

Hidden Things Drop Out

An element with display none leaves the tab order entirely. Show it again and it quietly returns to its DOM position.

Watch Dynamic Inserts

When JavaScript injects new controls, they land wherever you append them. Insert in a sensible spot so the order stays logical.

Modals Need Care

A dialog appended at the page end can leave focus stranded far away. Good focus management sends users into the modal on open.

Test by Tabbing

The proof is simple. Tab from the top and confirm focus moves in a sensible order with no surprising leaps around the screen.

Quick Check

Decide what really drives the default tab order.

Recap: Logical Tab Order

Keep focus moving the way people read. Match source order to the visual layout, avoid positive tabindex, and Tab-test the result. ✅
