Disclosure oder Tabs: das richtige Muster wählen

Tabs and accordions both hide and show content, so they get confused. Picking the wrong pattern can leave users disoriented.

A tab set presents mutually exclusive views: opening one panel closes the others. It suits content the user compares one slice at a time.

An accordion lets several sections stay open at once. It fits a long page of FAQs where users may want two answers side by side.

A single show-and-hide is a disclosure: one button, one region. Use it when there is just one chunk of optional detail to reveal.

The patterns use different ARIA. Tabs need tablist and arrow keys; a disclosure or accordion needs only a button with aria-expanded.

Tabs work best when each label is short and the row fits across the top. If labels are long, an accordion that stacks vertically reads better.

On narrow screens, a horizontal tab row often overflows. An accordion stacks naturally, so many teams switch patterns at small sizes.

Ask if sections are independent. If users benefit from reading several together, choose an accordion; if only one view fits, choose tabs.

Avoid building either pattern from plain links that scroll. Links go places; these controls toggle content, so they need button semantics.

If one pattern is borderline, prefer the simpler one. A disclosure or accordion has less ARIA to get wrong than a full tab widget.

The right choice flows from the content, not the look. Decide how users need to read and compare it, then map that to a pattern.
